Anyone that knows me, knows I love a good Champagne brunch and having sampled most of the island’s impressive offerings in this space, I am always excited when a new concept comes to town.

This time we ventured to the timeless, colonial inspired hotel, The Intercontinental where Ash & Elm serves up its Classic Weekend Brunch with Seafood & Caviar. Offering the brunch on both a Saturday and Sunday is a welcome feature especially for those parents amongst us.

Stepping into Ash & Elm, the dark woods and earthy tones are symbolic of burning wood-fire and glowing embers – it presents itself as a proper dining destination with charcuterie and cheese rooms and even a pizza oven. A step above the often bland hotel restaurants.

Our group of 8 decides to embark on the elevated brunch experience, which will feature fine seafood, caviar, gourmet cheese and signature meats from the Charcoal Grill served with unlimited Tattinger Brut champagne. I am fortunate enough to have visited the Tattinger champagne house twice and it is one of my favourite premium champagnes – a subtle blend offering a light, elegant and balanced champagne which is a perfect match for an afternoon brunch.

The style of brunch here is shared platters – so all menu items are presented on the table. However, customisations can easily be made for dietary restrictions (all items are clearly labelled according to dietary needs) and extra items can also be ordered if you so desire. We were impressed when one of our diners had a dietary issue that we had not informed them about in advance and an entire separate platter came out just for her.

Our appetizers included a charcuterie selection, bakery selection, cheeses and grilled shrimps with chilli and chives. Being a huge truffle fan, my favourite was the Truffle Egg Mayo Baguette and I also adored the Compressed Watermelon, Crab, Celery, Guacamole bite.

Champagne brunch for me is all about seafood (and champagne of course!) so the highlight of my afternoon was the Seafood & Caviar – a generous platter brimming with oysters, scallops, Alaskan king crab, Boston lobster and Kaluga Queen Caviar – a luxurious treat indeed!

The next course was immensely popular with the group – Truffle Poached Eggs with Chives and Virginia Ham and Grated Cheese Toast, one guest could not get his hands on enough of those moreish cheese toasties.

Onto the mains and you can select your preferred protein from a fine array of gourmet choices including Spanish Pork, French Yellow Chicken, Beef Short Ribs or the Ocean Catch of the Day – easily something to please everyone.

You would be well advised to leave a little space for dessert as the divine looking platter of sweet morsels is hard to resist – a range of classics including red velvet cake, apple tartin, chocolate brownie, cheesecake, macarons and pralines – enough to send any sweet tooth to heaven and back.

Wholly satisfied and in a champagne induced joyful mood we all agreed this was a stellar addition to the Singapore champagne brunch scene – combining the quality of the offering with the on point service, up-scale ambience and excellent price point we will be sure to recommend this to our fellow brunch revellers.

I felt light as I walked in to the Beach Road Kitchen @ JW Marriott as I was met with fresh, clean lines of décor.

Much like Inspector Morse I walked around to survey the Sunday lunch buffet before finding a suitable enclave to park myself for the next three hours.

There were so many parts to this buffet that resonated with me, the most outstanding one being the cold seafood on ice. Lobster, prawns, crabs, mussels and more. This excited me.

My favourite way to really taste seafood I feel! No thick sauces. Just the true taste of the sea’s fresh produce. Needless to say I had two helpings at this station which went down tremendously well with a glass of Moet.

The free flow alcohol was very generous as I found my glass topped up every time I returned from the buffet.

The cold room which housed oysters, smoked salmon varieties, cheese platters, salads and sushi, sashimi were not only beautifully presented, they were so fresh too.

Much to my delight I found out the buffet was only $118++ a steal after observing the amount of fresh seafood produce and quality meats that were on the buffet.

It was time to move on to the grill section where meats looked scrumptious – what would I have and what would I leave out? So hard to discern. Everything looked so good.

I settled on the pork rib and lamb chop even though there was beef wagyu, chicken and lobster thermidore, amongst others. Excellent quality of meats – I wish I could have gone back for more.

I had not come to the Asian fare yet! Lamb chop briyani, a string of cooked Chinese and Indian dishes it was time to make a decision.

Walk past and head straight to the laksa station as recommended by Stefan the General Manager of Beach Road Kitchen. So I did!

Building my laksa bowl I had a choice of noodle and vegetables, condiments that came in the form of lobster balls, fish balls and chicken balls. Whacking a dollop of sambal (chilly paste) on top of the laksa I could smell the flavor waft into my nostrils.

One mouthful and I knew this was an authentic laksa. Some influencers on my table would have liked the gravy thicker but I felt the consistency was perfect. Lucky guests of the JW Marriott!

The magic of Beach Road Kitchen was the ambience. I hadn’t realized that more than two hours had slipped by and I had not noticed. This was a big sign that I was having a good time.

The designers of this Beach Road Kitchen space created enclaves that provided quiet reprieve from other diners. Very clever!

I was at the dessert station. Perhaps a bit of Peranakan kuih (cakes made with glutinous rice) and a lemon tart? So I had an onde-onde - green glutinous balls with brown sugar on the inside rolled in fresh coconut on the outside.

If you’ve never tried these they are divine, as the brown sugar bursts out of the ball as you bite into it so best to put the whole thing in your mouth in one go.

I needed a coffee. A long black hit the spot. It rounded up my Sunday lunch and sadly it was time to go.

I felt the Beach Road Kitchen was impressive on many fronts – superb service, fresh and quality food plus a curated atmosphere that left diners feeling relaxed and comfortable.

We were the last to leave! I was not surprised……

Same same but definitely different, Beach Road Kitchen is a boutique offering of the usual buffet brunch.

A Sunday Brunch that is well thought out, Beach Road Kitchen impresses with their selection and presentation of buffet favourites.

A warm welcome, a seamless walkthrough and introduction to Beach Road Kitchen greeted me on arrival. Check. The tone was set for what was to be a very pleasant Sunday brunch. I lie, it was amazing.

Presentation of Buffet - tactile use of space.

And what a beautiful presentation of the different stations. Of particular highlight - the temperature controlled cold room with alcoves for items such as the cheese, charcuterie, Japanese cold noodles, Fine de Clair oysters, sushi, sashimi that were all so beautifully plated. The space is really well-designed for an enjoyable, leisurely browse-through.

The Food is Excellent

Seafood and shellfish lovers, you have to check out their seafood station. Fresh and of high quality, the different types of crab, alaskan crab included, lobster, prawns, clams and mussels beautifully arranged on crushed ice definitely makes this station my favourite stop.

Carving station

I really couldn’t fault the meat section either, not with Beef Tomahawk, lamb biryani, ribs, lamb chops and a salt baked fish calling out to me.

Overall, a very well-balanced, well-represented array of food items that will have you eating for hours.

I particularly love the mix of unique local, Asian and international food items. The laksa was delicious, the Peranakan desserts were aplenty, the chili crab was sweet and savoury as expected. I even found some really unusual items such as Vietnamese pork terrine, Japanese cold noodles with choice of marinated clams and chilled tofu with century egg.

Beach Road Kitchen is definitely not your usual run-of-the-mill Sunday brunch, it is a boutique version of a buffet which ticks the boxes for quality, variety and ambiance.

Could this be the best Champagne Brunch in Singapore?

Winston Churchill’s favourite Champagne was Pol Roger - although your journalist is more fond of Billecart-Salmon. It is claimed that between 1908 and 1945 Churchill had over 40,000 bottles of Champagne opened for him. His daily routine was alleged to have consisted of a large breakfast at 7.30am, a weak whisky and soda at 11am and champagne with his lunch.

As someone who enjoyed so much Champagne, it is perhaps not surprising that he has quotes attributed to him about the drink. One has a touch of Lily Bollinger - who was the head of the Bollinger Champagne business: “Champagne. In success you deserve it and in defeat, you need it.”
Fortunately Singapore is inundated with some excellent Champagne brunches, making competition very fierce. As most seasoned readers will know, brunch - a portmanteau of breakfast and lunch - is regularly accompanied by some form of alcoholic beverage served with it - usually champagne. Brunch originated in England in the late 19th century - how typically Victorian! - and became popular in the United States in the 1930s.

When arriving at the Beach Road Kitchen, the diner is confronted by a formidable buffet. The spread includes an enchanting selection of local and international delicacies - celebrating freshness in its offerings and a wide variety of live stations with chefs in attendance.

The amount of shellfish is overwhelming and it is all beautifully presented. It is all so fresh that I am sure that a couple of the crustacea twitched, but while all prepared to perfection, sadly it was missing the spicy chutney relish usually found at these kinds of offerings. The meats were all, again, cooked perfectly, but as an Englishman, I do expect some sort of hot gravy to go with meat. The cheeses were simply epicurean, as was the anti-pasti.

Amazing Normandy oysters were delectable and were washed down beautifully with a fine Moët Chandon 2012 Extra Brut Grand Vintage - which is showing well, unfurling in the glass with an expressive bouquet of ripe yellow orchard fruit, peaches, toasted nuts, warm bread and honeycomb.

On the palate, the Moët Chandon 2012 Extra Brut Grand Vintage is medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with a tangy but ripe core of fruit, nicely integrated acids and a pinpoint mousse, concluding with an attractively fruit-driven finish. The 2012 reflects both the concentration of the vintage and Moët's push for riper fruit, and it is already quite accessible.

The lobster thermidor was a little disappointing and would have benefited from not being tepid. And while an attempt at Laksa was appreciated, we are a tough crowd - and it didn't contain enough coconut milk.

The string balloon lady was extremely charming and made those reviewing this fabulous champagne brunch amusing little objects d'art - my son loved his golden crown - as modeled by Expat Choice founder John Gordon.

Unlimited bubbles with fine cheeses, premium roasts and seafood all came in at a very competitive $168++ per person. Sundays from 12pm to 3pm. Worth recalling that Churchill also said: “Remember, gentlemen, it’s not just France we are fighting for, it’s Champagne!”

Fantastic article and worth a read. Singaporeans and particularly the ex-pats love a brunch here....

The Sunday brunch at St Regis is an all afternoon affair! The first leg begins at the Astor Bar where champagne and cocktails are served. Warm and cosy in atmosphere I walked in to the sound of piano playing in the background.

Leather upholstered chairs with a cosy bar in the back, the ambience of this bar lends itself to a beautiful backdrop for brunch to begin. Laughter and cheer are but part of this whole experience in ushering forth the weekend fun.

As I sipped my glass of Ruinart champagne and enjoyed the chatter of friends, I felt that the St Regis had crafted the perfect model. I don’t know about you but I like having an aperitif in a classy bar before the actual big bang lunch. A lovely pre-cursor to build my appetite for the rest of the afternoon.

I was pre-empted that brunch was about to start in the Brasserie Les Saveurs of the St Regis. Walking across the hotel lobby I was shown to my table, with a beautiful outlook to the greenery outdoors.

Unlike most other brunches I was given a menu card to order my starter of eggs done in a variety of ways – benedict, poached or scrambled. Not an eggs fan?

Well there was foie gras on the list too! So that was my choice. Milling around to the buffet there were the usual bakery and patisserie treats, charcuterie and desserts, a plethora of seafood mains and carvery too.

The trick in my mind when at a buffet is to identify favourites and leave the rest. So a brown roll with spicy salami and shaved jamon was my choice of starter with the third glass of champagne! Scrumptious combo.

My next a la carte order of grilled half Maine lobster with garlic butter sauce was really fresh. Tender to the bite, the lobster flesh pulled away from the shell easily and I wish I could have had another half.

Back to the buffet I picked up the foie gras crème brulee which turned out to be everything I thought it would. In fact I went back for seconds later, not in the least perturbed by the high cholesterol food I was devouring.

Back at the buffet main the chef was shucking oysters and combining a crab meat, sea urchin foam with caviar. Talk about rich food. This certainly crowned it!

A chat and a light interval to prepare for the Chateaubriand de Boeuf that was about to arrive. Served with green peas and French beans this was a succulent piece of meat grilled to perfection.

In fact in terms of portion it was pretty generous too. Other mains included baked cod and a vegetarian option, all of which looked amazing. Truly by this time I was ready to call it a day.

But my crepe suzette which was part of the a la carte menu arrived. There is something to be said for that bit of sweet after a full meal. It is always welcome and in fact has become quite a habit with me.

The brunch menu changed a couple of weeks ago. Promising more high quality products and inhouse fare, it is evident to see the value in this brunch. For $198++ how could anyone not try this?

As soon as you enter the chic atmosphere of the Astor Bar, you feel you have arrived. The intimate surrounds, a perfect pianist and the free flowing champagne and cocktails, (for an hour!), was the perfect way to settle in to our brunch experience at St Regis.

Once we had enjoyed catching up over delectable canapés and drink, we headed into the light and airy Brasserie Les Saveurs, where we were able to enjoy a relaxing view of the pool and water fountains while choosing from an array of appetisers and mains.

In the meantime the smoked salmon tartare with avocado and salmon caviar arrived, which I enjoyed immensely. I also thoroughly enjoyed my appetiser of Pan Seared Foie Gras - it just melted in my mouth.

Continuing on with the Foie Gras theme, I selected samples of the Foie Gras Mouse in a charcoal cone, Foie Gras Terrine and my favourite dish of the day, the Crème Brulee Foie Gras from the generous buffet. I also relished the tastes of both the Duck and Salmon Rilletes alongside the beautiful variety of salads made of high quality ingredients.

As the fun and frivolity flowed between our group, so did the free flowing Ruinart Champagne. And once we were finished with the bubbles we were able to move to wine, where there was a nice selection of red and whites (and Bloody Mary’s!), which kept our thirst at bay throughout the afternoon.

Next we were treated to grilled Maine lobster with garlic butter sauce. The lobster was incredibly succulent and cooked to perfection. This was definitely a highlight of the brunch.

As our bellies expanded we were treated to the sweet sounds of a gorgeous female jazz singer, which lulled us into expanding our bellies even more with our mains. My main of baked cod with lentil ragout and green asparagus was delicious, however I did have food envy, as the grilled beef tenderloin with green peas and French beans looked and smelt incredible.

However, I was not disappointed when it came to the selection of decadent sweets. A heavenly chocolate macaron, a slice of Opera Cake and a kefir lime jelly mousse were the perfect way to end of the afternoon.

This was my first brunch in Singapore and I found it a more refined, relaxed and intimate compared to brunches in some of the high-end Hong Kong hotels. I look forward to more brunches of this caliber in Singapore!

Rock Star Greeting “Welcome to the famous St Regis Singapore”. You can’t help but feel special when you are greeted with such warmth and then personally escorted through enormous glass doors.

Within minutes I was sipping on a glass of Ruinart Champagne inside the classic elegance of the Astor Bar with my host John Gordon of Expat Choice Asia.

WOW Wine Service

A highlight of the wine service was the Brasserie Les Saveurs Restaurant Sommelier conducting a sabrage on a bottle of Ruinart Champagne. Sabrage is a technique where a sword or “saber” is used to open the bottle. It’s very theatrical and has its history dating back to Napoleon times.
Ruinart is the oldest Champagne house that has exclusively produced Champagne since 1729. In the past 10 years Ruinart has had two women winemakers: Amelie Chatin who was followed by Caroline Fiot.

St Regis is following suit by appointing fabulous women in leadership roles: the Director of Food & Beverage and the Director of Marketing Communications, both with fabulous first names Denise and Denice respectively! However, they still have some work to do to get the wine service and the wait staff to a level befitting the luxury of the brand.

WOW Moments

Brasserie Les Saveurs and its olde-world architecture is reminiscent of the stately castles and manors of Europe, especially its floor-to-ceiling windows and resplendent crystal chandelier.

A table by the window overlooking the tropical garden and sparkling pool is a gorgeous spot to indulge in a Sunday afternoon brunch with specially crafted canapés, a lavish spread of appetisers and decadent desserts.
Oysters, snails, sashimi and jamon were followed by smoked salmon tartare with avocado and salmon caviar.

We then experienced perfectly pan seared foie gras and grilled Maine lobster with garlic butter sauce. Chateaubriand de boeuf with fresh green peas and French beans rounded out the meal.

There was almost no room for dessert. Almost.

It was a treat to meet recently appointed Executive Chef, Thibault Chiumenti. At our table he shared his culinary journey and what he has in store for the dining experience at St Regis Hotel. Exciting times ahead.

If you were ever in two minds about having Sunday brunch at the St Regis, I highly recommend giving it a try.

Ahhh .. we all love a Sunday brunch (don’t we or is that just me ). I have made it my personal Mission to find the best in Singapore .. and I might just be getting close! #manhattanbar located in the Regent Hotel, is an indulgent miss of old class charm, brooding atmosphere, smouldering cocktails and oh so good food. This is an adults only brunch that features not only a Bloody Mary station but a whiskey milkshake stand (OMG) and six (count them six!) bespoke cocktails for you to work your way through. A small but very well stocked buffet (seafood, fresh bagels, salads and amazing desserts) are complemented by two breakfast course and three lunch courses that are served at your table. With lovely service and at just $150++ for cocktails and brunch .. you really must do yourself a favour and try this one.

Good Article, thank you for taking the time to highlight these. Our favourite is Pan Pacific The Edge because it is a 3 and a half hour lunch where usually the other hotels offer just 3 hours and last pour is usually at 2 hours and 45 minutes
