If you are wondering what to do next week come on down to the inaugural Chinatown Opera Festival that starts on 20th November. From workshops to opera performances and much more, locals and tourists will be in for a treat. Not known to many, Smith Street before the war was where Cantonese opera was performed. Bombs decimated half the theatre which has now been erected as a hotel. Looking pristine in its white regalia, we had the privilege of riding a trishaw down the mall to relive memories of what it was like in the past. If you are an Expat living in Singapore this is an opportune time to get an insight into historic traditions. This Festival holds a cultural appeal that is a century old which is something relish right on your doorstep. While most performances are free, tickets for a price of $10 or so are on sale for the opera performances on the actual 1950’s stage that are familiar to some. Tickets can be obtained from the Visitors Centre or online and they are selling out fast. For those interested in Chinese opera performances, the renowned Guangzhou Hongdou Cantonese Opera Troupe will be performing with local troupes. Some of the more known operas like “Farewell My Concubine” and “The Patriotic Princess” will be performed so this is an opportunity to soak in some culture to your week before the Festival ends on 24th November. Worried about the younger ones? Well don’t be! The festival aims to engage younger generations too with Hainanese puppetry, mask painting, social media activities and interactive workshops. Take advantage of this opportunity to recreate the nostalgic experience of opera!

One of the best Vietnamese food in the city area of Singapore. You will love the BBQ chicken banh mi and the beef pho which are both extremely popular. Moc Quan is a casual restaurant, good for families with kids or a quick meal on your own. Highly recommended.

I have lived and have eaten A LOT of great food and Pho in vietnam, so I will definitely recommend Mrs. Pho to anyone looking for delicious Vietnamese food in SIngapore. I love the cozy space, big menu with diverse Vietnamese cuisine and very affordable price (all under $10), and last but not least, it’s the friendly, kind staff that makes you feel welcomed to come back. Thank you for your authentic taste of Vietnamese food.
