  • Christmas the Danish Way With Leckerbaer

Christmas is on its way and in Denmark, it’s peak hygge season. In a bid to refresh offerings that cater to the local palate and bring forth a Danish Christmas experience, Leckerbaer Singapore has come up with a sleigh of new småkager, a selection of new tarts and puffs, heart-warming gift sets and all-inclusive event packages offering a one-stop, dessert set-up for all festive gatherings and special occasions.

Aptly titled “From Denmark, with love” as a nod to Leckerbaer’s origins from the streets of Copenhagen, the campaign is all about keeping celebrations warm, homey yet wonderfully decadent. In a bid to refresh offerings that suit the Singaporean palate while conveying the Danish way of spending Christmas, co-founders Jakob and Gabi Bär Mogensen have specially made their way to Singapore to develop new recipes across its collection of småkager and pastries.

Launched just in time for the season, the campaign also includes thoughtfully curated gift sets that are meant to be enjoyed throughout the holidays with its pairing of hand-made Christmas cookies with teas from Art of Tea – a Los Angeles (USA) based tea company and Caerus Holding’s preferred tea artisan across its portfolios – alongside event packages for corporate or intimate gatherings.

Småkager KV

Visually enticing as always, the new rotation of Christmas småkager (from now to 31 December 2022) features an inventive balance of the nutty, fruity and spiced to fit traditions of warmer profiles in winter. Standouts include a Chocolate dolloped with hibiscus meringue on a chewy chocolate cake; Hazelnut contrasted with lychee curd topped with meringue swirl; Pistachio financier brightened with mandarin and calamansi curd, and a Christmas-spiced Salted Caramel dolloped on dark chocolate coated butter cookies.

The Leckerbaer småkager collection is available in a seasonal designed box of 8 ($24) with a snowy façade of Copenhagen’s iconic Nyhavn River. Other options include a box of 12 (S$35) or 16 (S$46) and a new box of 4 (S$12) that could be easily incorporated into a bundle of gifts.

Lemon _ Earl Grey Mini Tart

Part of the festive overhaul is a selection of new puffs, dessert jars, tarts and mini tarts available till 31 December. A perennial favourite loved for its delightful airiness are two cream puffs (both S$8.50) – a Cherry Puff with Salted Caramel piped with vanilla pastry cream and a cherry compote and spiced caramel heart, finished with cherry meringue, berry curd and a fresh blueberry that sits atop; alongside a rich Chocolate & Hazelnut Puff filled with 70% dark chocolate mousse, namelaka and hazelnut praline, with a meringue and gold chocolate circle crown for chocolate lovers.

Tarts on the other hand are kept bright and fruity with a generous swirl of torched meringue as the perfect accompaniment to coffees and teas. An update of Leckerbaer’s Lemon & Seabuckthorn, the Lemon & Earl Grey Tart mellows the tart curd with a hint of floral earl grey, while the Yuzu & Apple Tart balances the distinct citrus with a warming apple compote.

Dessert Jar - Lemon Cloud

Those preferring daintier portions can go for a trio of mini tarts with mainstays such as the online-exclusive Passion Mini with passionfruit curd and meringue topped with freeze-dried raspberries, while the Red Berry Mini of red berry curd and meringue swirl, and the new Lemon & Earl Grey Mini are available in-stores. All mini tarts are also available in gift-ready boxes of 4 (S$12), 8 (S$24), 12 (S$35), 16 (S$46) and 63 (S$180, pre-order online).

Fun, colourful and easily indulged in scoops are two new dessert jars. Stored in a mason jar is a dreamy Lemon Cloud Dessert Jar ($7.50) that layers airy lemon mousse, passionfruit curd amidst soft meringue, with textures of hazelnut cake, crunchy tuille, dulcey pearls and chocolate shreds. On the chocolatey spectrum is the Midnight Chocolate Dessert Jar ($8) with its chocolate mousse base lifted by mandarin and calamansi curd with crunchy toppings that are best enjoyed with all elements by the spoonful.

Christmas Set (Cookies _ Tea)

Beside the gift boxes of småkagers or mini tarts, this year’s options include two Christmas Hampers that are meant to be enjoyed over a longer period of time as compared to its freshly baked counterparts.

Intended for breakfast or tea breaks, the Cookies & Tea Set (S$58) comes packaged with a choice of 3 homemade Christmas cookies and a canister of tea by Art of Tea, all wrapped with a ribbon and a specially designed greeting card. Meanwhile, Cookies & Champagne Set (S$98) offers a celebratory pop of exquisite Bruno Paillard Première Cuvée (375ml) with 2 Christmas cookie choices.

Leckerbaer was founded in Copenhagen, Denmark by two pastry chefs who shared a passion for pastry sweet creations. With extensive Michelin-Star experience behind them in creating unique Småkagers (cookies in Danish) this duo churn out cookies that boast creative looks and have contrasting flavours of sweet and tangy. If you only relate Danish cookies to conventional swirl butter shortbread in the blue tin, visit Leckerbaer and think again!!

Their first flagship store housed in Isetan, Shaw House, Singapore opened in July 2020 which met with great success. The Keong Saik flagship store followed with a Scandinavian concept in November 2021. Here is where you get a taste of Danish cozy hygge experience as soon as you step in.

A mood-lifting gem Leckerbaer is for me and moreso in the buzzy street of Keong Saik. Wooden tables and rattan chairs are lifted with natural lighting shining through from the ceiling above.

A few bite-sized pretty småkagers with a cup of tea or coffee, instantly transported me to Denmark. The level of relaxation and positive energy coming out of hygge is as close as the zen energy in oriental culture. I can really relate one with the other.

As soon as I stepped in to the store, I couldn’t help but smile. Looking at the window display of so many colourful småkagers, definitely a step up from macaroons. Paired with a perfect cuppa latte, I tried Chocolate & Hazelnut, Lemon & Earl Grey, Cherry, and Midnight Chocolate in a jar.

A big fan of Lemon Meringue pie for its extreme sweet and tangy combination, here at Leckerbaer I got to taste this in all kinds of variations of flavours and ingredients.  Cherry stood out especially for me as the combined acid cheery curd with salty caramel took the whole concept to another level. Wow! This was heaven for me!

At Leckerbaer they constantly rotate the småkagers’ designs and flavours to keep customer choices interesting. There is also a focus on local ingredients such as passionfruit and calamansi to create something with tropical fusion and a local twist.
The Midnight Chocolate Jar was one of the new creations that used chocolate mousse as a base. A further lift to the taste was refreshing mandarin and calamansi curd with added toppings for a crunchy finish.

As Christmas approaches, Leckerbaer  has launched various gift sets which not only include handmade Christmas spiced cookies but also choices of teas or a bottle of champagne , for those with a higher budget. If gifting European friends in Singapore, top quality handmade spiced cookies packed with abundant spice flavours are available.

Alternatively, Leckerbaer’s festive mini tarts are also available in boxes of 4, 8, 12, 16 and even 63, pricing from $12 to $180 which would fit any gift budget. Apart from its inherently pretty look, each bite-sized Christmas småkager creates an ultra-delightful, well-balanced mixture of nutty, fruity and spiced for the palate.

Playing with such extensive ingredients from conventional chocolate, hazelnut and pistachio to the unconventional hibiscus, lychee, mandarin and calamansi, I guarantee whoever receives a Leckerbaer gift box will truly love the surprise in every bite!

If you are struggling for bigger party ideas, Leckerbaer also provides catering services for festive gatherings or special celebrations, with their 3 new event packages, from Berry, Citrus, and Christmas set at $408 onwards.

From small gifts to big parties, Leckerbaer is  ready to set them up for you and all at your fingertips, upon ordering online. As simple as that, hassle free!  Browse their menus online and get your Christmas gifts and treats sorted all in one stop!
