As a youngster, I was fascinated by how perfectly French food was prepared - this was at the same time that I was getting into my French language stride, and a similarly aged to me Vanessa Paradise crooned her tribute to Joe the taxi and his experiences of the embouteillage - or traffic jam:

Soon after, I began to discover the thing that would steer many of my tastes - wine. In particular, French wine, which despite the efforts of other European countries and the ‘new world’ remains the best hooch there is.

Ginett delighted us by revealing that on Wednesday evenings, bottles of wine are buy one get one free up to a value of $100 for a bottle - this means that bottles of Chateauneuf du Pape are on the buy one get one free list. This makes the brasserie one of the best values in town for relatively good wine at reasonable prices.

To go with the lashings of wine are various kinds of meticulously prepared steak - which are best shared - as well as a charcuterie board that was beautifully presented. The snails - always have to have those - are best avoided at Ginett as they were somewhat rubbery.

The staff are very pleasant and the place was packed - in the main, steamy, steamy bar-restaurant area, you’ll find the best people spotting.

Ginett is in the G Hotel, Middle Road

The most stunning bar in town, Ginett’s on Middle Road is magnetic. Walking in to this open style, casual restaurant it is such an easy spot to fall in love with. Very visible from the road it does call out to pedestrians and motorists alike.

Ginett is the most affordable bar that serves amazing French wines. Where can you go that has great wines at $6 a glass? I tried the Chateau du Cavalier, Blaye Cotes de Bordeaux for $8. A great start to any meal!

Gearing up for Christmas Ginett served the longest charcuterie board I have ever seen. Fill one of these and you are all set for your guests to have a wonderful night.

And so Ginett’s guests often come to dine and ask if the boards are for sale? A great reinforcer that guests appreciate good serving dishes which are just as important to enjoy the food more.

With a variety of cheeses, rillettes, salami and ham these were accompanied by walnuts, jam and apricots. Dressed beautifully it would be something I would recommend as a great start with a few glasses of wine.

In fact Ginett has created seating that is easy for guests to socialise as they have a few drinks. Whether at the bar or at high tables the very comfortable high chairs make it easy to mingle.

If planning an event the upper deck that looks down to the bar can seat 50 people or 80 standing. On this note, Ginett is not just a restaurant but a venue too.

A perfect enclave away from the buzz of the bar this would be great for presentations and corporate events. Ginett opens up for bookings from 1 November through to 31 December if you have a private event coming up or a networking or group booking to make.

There are signature dishes to choose from and daily specials too. With Christmas coming up Ginett will put on festive offers too. Good to book early as it is a popular restaurant that fills fast.

I was at Ginett at New Year’s Eve last year and found it to be electrifying with music in the background that lent an air of festive!

Sharing menus tapas style are also the order of the day. Many people opt for this now. To taste small bits of the variety available which help with eating lighter.

Since mains were about to be served I decided to try the Syrah - Les Deesses Muettes – Carignan. So easy to drink and so affordable. As Ginett sources wines themselves from boutique wineries they are able to cut the cost of an intermediary.

And so it is! That the wines here are simply yummy and at way below the norm for Singapore. A true jewel in the crown to take advantage of.

As I tucked in to the prime rib, turkey breast stuffed with sausage and chestnut, grilled lobster, truffle risotto and grilled asparagus, I felt Christmas had arrived. Funny how food can take us to a season so easily.

The Australian prime rib was grilled perfectly for those of us who prefer our meat rare. As was the Boston Maine lobster that was served with salad. Risotto looked creamy but was a favourite at the table.

Food that you might expect to be rich but wasn’t - the mark of a great chef. I felt I had space for dessert which was a change.

The signature crème brulee, tarte tatin and Bourbon pecan ice cream! Wow what a line up. Certainly calorific but what the heck. A bike ride or swim would definitely rebalance this lovely meal.

Ginett is the restaurant of Hotel G and a great burger bar sits right beside it. So if you are ever hanging out for a few drinks, grab a few friends and get yourself over to the stunning bar at Ginett’s.

It’s the season of mushrooms, and the chefs at Ginett are highlighting this prized ingredient in their wild mushroom and wine pairing menu, available until November. Get started on the charcoal-grilled mushroom salad, a delightful mix of maitake and oyster mushrooms, almonds and parmesan shavings and homemade truffle vinaigrette, and paired with a glass of VDP Viognier, Rhône Valley. The wine is a full-bodied white wine that balances out the smokiness of the charcoal-grilled mushrooms.

There are three main courses to choose from, but our recommendation is the duck parmentier. This dish of Barbary duck confit is mixed with cremini mushrooms and lodged between two layers of ratte potato. Topped with gratinated comte cheese, and served with a glass of Château Tour Bicheau, Graves to complement the richness of the main course.
