Expats have an advantage when they are approved PR status in Singapore. They attract healthcare subsides, have access to public education, often have better job opportunities, gain savings on property investment and accumulate CPF (the local superannuation/pension scheme).

From the time you submit your application it can take up to 6 months before you hear back from the authorities. You would also need to have lived in Singapore for at least six months before applying.

There are quite a few forms to complete pre-submission, your education history and other official documents such as your birth certificate. If the PR status is approved you would need to renew your Re-Entry Permit every five years.

Submission costs S$100 per person and you must book your submission appointment online - The waiting list for submission appointments can be as far off as three to five months. No matter your nationality, boys must complete the two year full-time National Service Military Programme at 18 years of age.

Singapore authorities can be quite strict on this. Talk for example that you decide to renounce your sons PR status just before his 18 birthday, you could risk any opportunity for your son to return to Singapore in the years ahead to seek employment, study or even live here.
