Green Spaces of Singapore

Published - 09 January 2018, Tuesday

We all know that Singapore is one of the world's major commercial hubs, and it is the fourth-largest financial centre as well as one of the busiest container ports in the world.

However, Singapore before becoming the urban concrete jungle it is today once was home to swathes of green tropical jungle, and an abundance of wildlife.

Sometimes we all need to get away from the grey concrete world, and Singapore has been careful to preserve some fantastic green spaces, for us all to enjoy.  You may be surprised to see how much greenery there is to explore, or how close to your own back door it is!

Gardens by the Bay

This is a park of 101 hectares of reclaimed land in the centre of Singapore.  Gardens by the Bay comprises of three waterfront gardens: Bay South Garden, Bay East Garden and Bay Central Garden.  The largest of these is Bay South.

One of the most fabulous attractions, and best to see at night is the towering Super Trees Grove.  This comes alive in the night time with a wonderful light and sound display – it’s like stepping onto the set of Avatar! There are also two impressive indoors environments: Flower Dome and Cloud Forest.

The aim of this was for the Singapore government to transform Singapore from a "Garden City" to a "City in a Garden", and we think it has done that just brilliantly!

Singapore Botanic Gardens

Singapore Botanic Gardens

The Botanic Gardens is an impressive 74-hectare oasis of greenery.   It was first opened in 1859.  It is open every day from 5am to 12pm, so you can always find a time to visit, and apart from the National Orchid Garden, it is free to enter!

The gardens have various different attractions within, including a small Tropical Rainforest, the Ginger Garden, the Botany Centre and Tanglin Gate. The Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden is a special garden for kids, which has play areas like the Water Play area, a small playground, tree houses with slides, and a maze. There are also interactive exhibits, and a mini-garden that showcases how plants may be used in everyday life from herbs in cooking to flavors for drinks.

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve

This is a smaller, but nonetheless important part of Singapore’s green spaces.  Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is home to more than 840 flowering plants and over 500 animal species, and is one of the largest patches of primary rainforest left in Singapore.   The nature reserve sits on the slopes of Bukit Timah Hill, Singapore's highest peak.

Many people come to walk, hike, or jog here.   There are also some keen climbers that come to rock climb and abseil at the Dairy Farm quarry.  It is also a great place to come mountain biking.
