Quite honestly, it has been an excruciatingly long time since we could step out and enjoy a meal “normally” where the only stress you’d be under is the hole it would dig in your pocket.

It’s good that mostly everyone is fully vaccinated though because it is time to gradually get back to some semblance of normalcy, and what better way to do it than with getting your favourite meal in one of the biggest food destinations in the world?

Luckily for our foodies, some newbies (along with some familiar names) are around the block. Expat Choice compiles a list of new places to check out this month.

There is everything from an ice cream store by esteemed chef Janice Wong to nasi lemak, reminiscent of hawkers and the joy the local food brings. Read on. Image Credit: Firangi Superstar Facebook Page

Common Man Coffee Roasters

The Common Man is back! The popular Martin Road and Stanley Street brunch place has now opened up along the Eastern side. If you know even a little bit about Singapore, you know that Common Man Coffee Roasters is the G.O.A.T. for a hearty and healthy brunch. Yes yes, they have their signature dishes alright but they’ve also come up with some other delectable delicacies like Sourdough pancakes. Tend to your sweet tooth or savour the savoury version of the good old sourdough and wash it down with copious amounts of fragrant coffee from one of the best cafes in town. Video Credit: Expat Choice Asia

Boeuf

The only beef you’ll have with people at Boeuf is the Asada ribeye, a 300 day grass fed Argentinian Aberdeen Black Angus. Melt-in-your-mouth chunks of delicious meat grace the plate and it doesn’t matter if it’s underdone, cured or grilled to perfection. You’ll go home satisfied regardless. Apart from the Asada, they even boast of housing everything from dry aged grass fed Welsh ribs to Argentinian Aberdeen Black Angus and the Australian asset, Wagyu MB7. Oh and don’t forget to go through the extensive list of wine options they proudly represent. Image Credit: Boeuf Singapore Facebook Page

Carrotsticks & Cravings

Carrotsticks & Cravings

This is the perfect combination of taste and health on a plate. Not only that, it looks so gorgeous that you’ll almost feel guilty of eating it. But don’t worry, no one’s here to judge. Located at Stanley Street, this happens to be the third outlet the fine folks at Carrotsticks & Cravings have opened up. If you’ve been to the other outlets, you already know what signatures they serve. But a healthy and hearty addition to the third outlet is the breakfast platter for two. It’s everything you want on a plate. We’re talking Sourdough Bread, Labneh Cheese, Puff Pastry with herb dill cream cheese, meat according to your choice, delicious eggs and of course, coffee. It’s okay, you can smile. Image Credit: Carrots & Cravings Facebook Page

Proper Slice

proper slice

Nothing beats a proper slice of pizza. A no nonsense pizzeria is all you need to tend to your pizza hankering on a busy weekday afternoon. It’s quick, filling and does the job better than most meals. All you need to do is walk in, order your favourite slice of pizza, pay and leave. Reminiscent of the old school pizzerias of New York, Proper Slice is brought to you by the people behind Lucali BYGB. However, pizzas are not all they have here. You can also call for mouth watering side dishes like meatballs, garlic knots, a decadent Stromboli filled with chunks of meat, a dessert calzone and the all time favourite pie-in-a-cup. OG Lemak

og lemak

This is the OG hawker stall right here. Agreed, it isn’t a cafe or a restaurant, but pay a visit to OG Lemak and be sure that you won’t be disappointed. Remember Chef Shen Tan’s famous nasi lemak comprising 11 ingredients? Well, it is back in the form of a modest stall in the Newton Food Centre. Soft and fluffy rice comes accompanied with four different options on the menu. Take your pick from chicken rendang, crispy chicken, beef rendang or vegan sides. Order one (or more if you’re feeling particularly famished) and have a nice meal at the mall or call for a takeaway and grab a couple of beers on the way. We’ll leave it up to you. Softhaus

softhaus

This is probably the one a lot of y’all have been waiting for. Esteemed pastry chef Janice Wong comes to you with Softhaus, an ice cream joint which has as many as 16 different flavours with more than 20 different toppings. Think scoops of decadent, creamy and tangy Mango Banana Passionfruit ice cream, a keto friendly Chocolate Sorbet to give you the best of both worlds and a Pear Thyme Sorbet. The best part is that you have the option to customize your scoop with macarons, crunchy popcorns (yes, it’s a little strange but that combination works) and handmade chocolates and choose between a waffle cone, cup or the rainbow bread. Oh and did you know that milk and sugar substitutes are also available for vegans? Image Credit: Softhaus Facebook Page

Naeum

Naeum Restaurant

Don’t hesitate to go “nom nom” at Naeum. Trust us, you won’t regret it one bit, as this is the newbie which is taking the Singaporean culinary scene by storm. Exceptional reviews from critics and diners have already started coming for its splendid Korean cuisine, and it’s safe to say that there is something in it for everyone. We’re talking creative options like Hwae (sashimi) reminiscent of the popular Korean hit Mulhwae and the Jjim which showcases the one of a kind steaming technique. Jjim is packed with subtle flavours of brined grouper which comes with spanner crab encased in a roulade of zucchini, cabbage and daikon. Don’t want to take risks with your food? Like things to be the old fashioned way? Well, they have various options which are an ode to the Korean method of grilling meats. Image Credit: Naeum Restaurant Facebook Page

Firangi Superstar

This one is for all the Indians in Singapore (or not). Either way, this restaurant started off as a tribute to India. It is situated in the Tanjong Pagar district and the entire venue is filled with crafty decor and infrastructure to complement its menu comprising modern Indian cuisine. Some dishes worth checking out include the Prata Waffle, a butter chicken dish which comes with waffle pressed prata and fried chicken done Madras style. Looking to go beyond meat? Try the This is Not Aloo Gobi, a rendition of the famed North Indian vegetable. Other options for mains include the tandoori lamb saddle and roasted and tandoor-charred pumpkin. Andrew Walsh
Chef Owner

Hailing from Ireland, Andrew's illustrious career has seen him worked alongside famous chefs at Michelin-starred restaurants all over the world from Ireland, London to New York City. Andrew was offered the opportunity to spearhead the launch of Esquina in Singapore to acclaim and the space quickly earned a reputation as Singapore’s top and pioneer Modern Spanish Tapas space, as well as The Study, a modern British restaurant.

Feeling that it was time for him to do his own thing and to create a space he can call his own, Andrew took the step and launched his first concept as Chef-Owner with Cure, a restaurant that focuses on modern Irish cuisine in 2015. Cure took off quickly with its casual fine-dining approach and was received with critical acclaim. He has since gone on to establish five additional restaurants under the umbrella of Cure Concepts, including Butcher Boy, an Asian-inspired bar and grill which launched in 2017 and Bao Boy in 2019, a cozy East meets West diner and bar that serves up bao burgers. Setting his sights beyond the shores of Singapore, Andrew debuted his first overseas venture, Ember Beach Club, in partnership with One&Only Desaru, Malaysia. Catfish followed shortly after in 2020. A contemporary Fish Grill & Raw Bar, Catfish serves up a seafood-centric fare highlighting the best of Asian ingredients, prepared through different styles and techniques. Apart from his own ventures, Andrew also serves as a Culinary Collaborator at the Straits Clan.
