Expat Choice Visits The Tuckshop - Assembly

Published - 03 December 2021, Friday

Old meets new in historic Geylang, a neighbourhood rich in restored shophouses and traditional eateries. An Italian and two Singaporeans, all local residents of the Geylang neighbourhood, are united by a common thread – the desire to give back to the community they have all grown to love and contribute to its rejuvenation.

Drawn to Geylang for its diverse cultural mix and rich historical heritage, The Tuckshop is envisioned as a communal social space to eat, drink and socialize, bringing a fresh impetus to the old-world charm. Here you'll find The Tuckshop, a café and bar providing a casual and relaxed environment to hang out and watch the world pass by.

With a locally-inspired food menu that you’ll also find an exclusive wine list, selected whiskies and familiar café drinks menu. All this can be enjoyed in a contemporary, yet nostalgic space that blends the familiar with the new. So head out and experience an up-and-coming area of Singapore that won't stay a secret for long. The Tuckshop has grown to be a thriving part of the Geylang neighbourhood and sits snugly on the corner of Guillemard Road overlooking the Kallang River.

Exposed brick walls, reclaimed casks for tables and industrial style seating sets the scene for the interiors. Dining at The Tuckshop promotes a casual yet particularly social atmosphere as the chances are you’ll be sitting next to someone on the communal long tables whom you've never met before and more than likely will become lifelong friends with. That's how it rolls at The Tuckshop.

You can expect excellence when it comes to the food menu while your down a few pints of the Tuckshop Assembly Ale. It's their very own exclusive tap, all locally brewed comprising of calamansi juice and gula melaka. Full bodied, fruity with a tinge of gula melaka with a subtle lime finish.

The Tuckshop Rib Finger (pictured above) is a tender and savoury wagyu beef slowed cooked in char siew style; sandwiched between soft pillowy flat steamed buns. One is definitely not enough.

Next the Sio Bak (Roast Pork) pictured above - a Roast-till-crisp Pork Belly with Nam prik dip. The Carrot Cake (pictured above) is delicious, a winner with our foodie crew. White raddish in spicy shrimp paste with cucumber and spring onion salad.

Seating also continues out on to the pavements providing al fresco setting for guests. This unique Singapore urban setting is relaxed and totally friendly and all-inclusive, exactly what Singapore thrives on, and aspires to deliver.

After consuming quite a few craft beers and Tuckshop Assembly Ale, we opted for the Truffle Fries. French fries with parmigiano and real truffle shaved on top together with the awesome Truffle Pizza. I'm not one for too much truffle but the Tuckshop Truffle Pizza was moorish to say the least.

Brilliant base cooked perfecting with a crispy crust and topped with lashings of Mozzarella, Parmigiano scamorza cheese, mushrooms and once again - real truffle that took on a caramelised texture having been cooked at such a high temperature. This I will be back for no doubt! You should put this on your to-eat list immediately. Also, the Beef Tongue 3-way with homemade sauerkraut and pickled tomatoes is a winner.

The Tuckshop is a hidden gem. It is peaceful and very comfortable. The staff are welcoming and receptive to all our needs. But mostly, I like that it's a chilled place where you can relax and have a drink in your shorts and T-shirt with people for all works of life and Nationalities.
