Plastic Surgery is found to be one of the most fervid surgical movements across the globe – a rage enhanced by the contemporary reign of our technology-advanced 21st century era!

In our continuing series highlighting Plastic Surgery procedures in Singapore, Expat Choice caught up with internationally acclaimed Plastic Surgeon, Dr Marco Faria Correa, to discuss Male Liposuction.

Truth be known, men are increasingly more aware of their options on hand when addressing cosmetic improvements to their body image. This is largely fuelled by today’s selfie-obsessed social media culture, and the rise of less invasive procedures.

As conveyed by Dr Marco, the pressure behind gaining a perfect body is much higher amongst women. However, the concern to improve body aesthetics has grown to be a common standing factor with men too. This has engendered the male interest in liposuction to be increasing considerably.

According to Dr Marco’s knowledge and experience – men who are discovering and looking for aesthetic procedures most frequently aim at options such as facial ageing, abdomen, and localised body fat. Therefore, the Plastic Surgery procedures most sought after by men are Facial Rejuvenation, Abdominoplasty and Liposuction.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure, based off using a suction technique for removing fat from specific areas of the body to reshape and contour areas such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, or neck. It is type of cosmetic procedure which targets fat removal in stubborn areas of the body. With this understanding, it is an excellent cosmetic procedure to achieve a defined muscular physique.

Many men prioritise care in their physical appearance and wish to make a good impression, whether it be for their personal or professional life. These men tend to create and maintain a lifestyle which incorporates eating right and spending a fair amount of time working out – for the sake of conquering a healthy and well-defined body. Despite immense efforts being put in towards their body image with consistency, there are plenty of males who face the challenge of conflicting stubborn body fat which refuses to go.

Oftentimes fat – especially male breast fat, abdominal fat, or those “side tires,” insist on staying. In cases such as these, Male Liposuction appears as the only effective solution for losing localised fat.

Not everyone is the perfect candidate for this type of surgery. To qualify for Male Liposuction, the patient must be within 30 percent of his body’s healthy weight zone. For best results to be achieved, he must have firm skin holding its natural elasticity.

For both men and women, Liposuction is identical – the surgical procedure is done in the same way to achieve the same goal.  The core concentration is centred in removing excessive localised fat from certain areas of the body and grafting it into another area of the patient’s body. The differences lie in the design, the shape and aesthetics of male and female patients.

Furthering understanding of the above mentioned for our readers – Dr Marco gives us the following comparison of Abdominal Liposuction for both genders. In Female Liposuction, the Plastic Surgeon focuses on the side of the abdomen to shape the patient’s body in a result which leaves a “guitar style” silhouette – this in turn naturally highlights the female curves. On the other hand, in Male Liposuction the goal is to remove excess fat, and to leave a defined flat belly.

Touching on what is the benefit liposuction offers a male – Dr Marco states the main benefit is better definition in the abdominal area and treating gynecomastia.

As a man ages, areas of fat tend to accumulate, especially in the abdomen, chest area and in the neck. Most often, this fat build-up has not been eliminated previously with ongoing practices of physical activities and exercise and/ or a healthy diet being followed.

Most of us know fat loss happens in general and is not localised. This is why we unfortunately cannot choose which part of the body is going to lose weight. Therefore, for those who want to eliminate localised fat – physical activity and diet do not always produce the desired outcome.

Men have a genetic predisposition to accumulate fat in the abdominal region and flanks. There are cases of men who have achieved results, but still suffer from a little “tire” on the side. In these cases, liposuction is indicated to eliminate fats located on the sides of the abdomen.

Male Liposuction can also be performed on the arms, a double chin, pubis area, thighs, knee and male breasts.

Not all fat can be aspirated during a liposuction. When belly fat is subcutaneous, for example, it poses no health hazard and can be easily removed during the procedure. The problem of fat for a man’s health and appearance can occur when the predominant fat is visceral.

Subcutaneous Fat is responsible for hiding the abdominal muscles and is located just below the skin layer. For this reason, subcutaneous fat can be touched and felt with fingers in localised fat regions.

Visceral Fat, on the other hand, cannot be touched or felt by the fingers of the Plastic Surgeon, as it lies between the organs of the body. There is evidence that men tend to have more visceral fat than women. The visceral fat cannot be removed by Liposuction.

The process of Liposuction Surgery removes fat cells permanently from the body. After receiving Liposuction Surgery, fat cells won’t move to the area you had treatment. However, other areas of the body may gain weight and expand if the weight begins to fluctuate.

If the patient’s skins holds great elasticity, the skin will likely appear smooth and even. Otherwise, in a patient without elasticity skin, the skin may appear loose.

Regarding the Recovery from Male Liposuction

Time of surgery lasts approximately two to three hours, depending on the area to be treated. The applied anaesthesia in this case is a general anaesthesia.

Post the procedure, the surgeon will recommend the patient to wear compression garments in the following few weeks, as the compression will help reduce the swelling.

Pain varies from patient to patient, but usually the pain most people feel is during the recovery process, and it disappears on average within 10 days after the surgery.

Swelling and bruising disappear between 15 and 21 days after the surgery. Any scars are virtually imperceptible, from 0.3 to 0.5 cm in length. Furthermore, the patient should avoid physical effort for at least two to three weeks after surgery.

On average, post a period of one month the patient will be free of restrictions. Although, it must be noted that the patient does need to continue keeping up with a healthy lifestyle, to avoid future weight gain, which can impair the result of the surgery undertaken.

Regarding the Results of Male Liposuction

Results of before and after Male Liposuction Surgery is certainly transformative and can be seen in up to two months of surgery. Usually, Male Liposuction leaves a man’s body with an athletic shape. This includes, defined and toned abdomen, straight waist and wide shoulders and chest.

Liposuction is one of the safest ways to remove excess body fat. While the best results show after a few weeks or months, the patient can still see immediate results right after the surgery.

Liposuction is a viable option for many men as the procedure alone can effectively correct the problem areas. In most cases, men retain their skin elasticity longer than women do, as the layer of fat beneath the skin tends to be firmer and more vascular in men than in women.

One of the most consistent reasons men get Liposuction is to work on getting a Healthier-Looking and Younger Natural Appearance. This helps men feel more confident in their bodies, which encourages success in both personal and business relationships.
