A Brief on Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

Published - 28 March 2023, Tuesday

Plastic Surgery is found to be one of the most fervid surgical movements across the globe – a rage enhanced by the contemporary reign of our technology-advanced 21st century era!

In our continuing series highlighting Plastic Surgery procedures in Singapore, Expat Choice caught up with internationally acclaimed Plastic Surgeon, Dr Marco Faria Correa for an insightful briefing on Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery.

The saying, ‘eyes are the window to one’s soul’ – does manifest truth for those who consciously observe and experience it. According to Dr Marco, our eyes can show the age of our souls and the age of our body.

People can oftentimes postulate the soul’s overriding feeling, against what they’ve seen transferred from our eyes.  In Dr Marco’s words, “If our eyes look well rested, youthful, and bright, most will assume this to be ourselves or our mood. If our eyes project looks of exhaustion, annoyance, depression, and disinterest, people will also assume likewise.” He goes on to share that our eyes channel ability to express beauty, joy, kindness, tension, doubt, and sadness – amongst a host of other emotions.

When it comes to ageing, some physical changes are harder to conceal than others. The passage of time and sun damage can result in loose, saggy skin around our eyelids or under-eye baggage. One of the earliest signs noticed in premature facial ageing – is droopy upper eyelids.

Whether you wish to improve your appearance or you are experiencing functional problems with your eyelids – Eyelid Surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes.

Technically known as Blepharoplasty, Eyelids Surgery is a surgical procedure which focusses on improving the appearance of the eyelids with restorative techniques. The surgery can be performed on the Upper Lids, Lower Lids, or both.

Eyelid Surgery targets treatments for facial skin conditions such as

  • loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid – sometimes causing vision impairment
  • fatty deposits appearing as puffiness in the eyelids
  • bags under the eyes
  • drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris
  • excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid

If considering Eyelid Surgery as serious candidates, both males and females should be cautious and realistic about the expected outcome of the procedure. But more importantly – patients need to be in good health and without any serious existing eye condition to proceed.

Sometimes, Blepharoplasty is purely a cosmetic procedure, intended to create a more youthful appearance. Other times, it’s a procedure to improve the patient’s eyesight. If extra skin is weighted down withing the upper eyelid, it can droop low enough to impair the upper half of your vision.

When the issue is under the eye, the surgeon may perform a lower Blepharoplasty – to remove or reposition fat below the lid, around the eye socket. The appearance of drooping upper lid, may also be due to the relaxation of the forehead, skin and eyebrow.

Sometimes stretching out the upper eyelid muscle might be the cause for a drooping eyelid. This is called Eyelid Ptosis and requires a different surgical treatment. In some cases, circumstances call for Blepharoplasty to be performed in conjunction with an Endoscopic Browlift or the Browlift Procedure – purposed to give a fresher rejuvenating look around the eye socket or eye orbital area. The resulting outcome helps towards uplifting a patient’s overall confidence and self-esteem.

Evaluation of the patient’s facial anatomy and the facial proportions is required by the surgeon, after which an ensuing discussion will take place to lay out what procedures might best remedy patient’s concerns. This is done with intention to achieve the best possible results with Eyelid Surgery, or Blepharoplasty.

Eyelid Surgery is otherwise a simple and straightforward procedure where it is usually performed as a day surgery procedure, under local anaesthesia, taking about an hour in total.

Dr Marco explains that it is essential to assess case by case to understand the unique needs and requirements of each patient, and to choose the appropriate procedure that will help to achieve a natural and appropriate result, increasing the beauty and joviality of the face.  He remarks, “We tailor our surgical plans and procedures by considering the singularity and the individual needs of each patient.
