All you Need to Know About Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

In our continuing series highlighting Plastic Surgery procedures in Singapore, Expat Choice caught up with internationally acclaimed Plastic Surgeon Dr Marco Faria Correa to discuss Eyelid Surgery and Brow Lift.

According to Dr. Marco, “Our eyes can express joy, happiness, beauty, and sadness. Our eyes show the age of our souls and the age of our body. If our eyes look well rested, youthful, and bright, most will assume this is how we are feeling. If our eyes project a tired, depressed, and uninterested look, people will also assume likewise.”

Some signs of aging are harder to conceal. The passage of time and sun damage can leave us with loose, saggy skin around our eyelids or under-eye baggage. One of the earliest signs of early ageing in the face is the notice of the droopy upper eyelids.

Eyelid Surgery, technically known as Blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids. The surgery can be performed on the Upper Lids, Lower Lids, or both. Whether you want to improve your appearance or you are experiencing functional problems with your eyelids, eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes.

Eyelid Surgery can treat loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision, fatty deposits appearing as puffiness in the eyelids, bags under the eyes, drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris, as well as excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid

When considering Eyelid Surgery both men and women need to be realistic about the expected outcome of the procedure, but more importantly patients need to be healthy, and without any serious existing eye condition to proceed.

Sometimes Eyelid Surgery is a purely cosmetic procedure, intended to create a more youthful appearance. Other times, it´s a procedure to improve the patient’s eyesight. If extra skin weighs down the upper eyelid, it can droop low enough to impair the upper half of your vision.

When the issue is under the eye, the surgeon may perform a lower Blepharoplasty, removing or repositioning fat below the lid, around the eye socket. The appearance of a drooping upper lid may also be due to the relaxation of the forehead skin and eyebrow.

Sometimes stretching out the upper eyelid muscle may cause a drooping eyelid. This is called Eyelid Ptosis and requires a different surgical treatment. In some circumstances, Blepharoplasty can also be combined with an Endoscopic Browlift or the Browlift Procedure to give a fresher rejuvenation around the eye socket or eye orbital area.

To achieve the best possible results with Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery, the Plastic Surgeon will evaluate the patient´s facial anatomy and the facial proportions, and then discuss what procedures might best remedy patient´s concerns.

“Eyelid Surgery is a simple and straightforward procedure where it is usually performed as a day surgery procedure, under local anaesthesia, taking about an hour in total,” shares Dr. Marco.

Dr Marco adds, “Blepharoplasty can be performed alone, or in conjunction with other facial surgery procedures such as a Facelift or Browlift. Eye rejuvenation through Blepharoplasty will contribute to the harmony and beauty of the face, adding a more jovial, rested and attractive appearance to the face, helping with a patient’s overall confidence and self-esteem”.

According to Dr. Marco, it´s essential to assess case by case, to understand the unique needs and requirements of each patient, and to choose the appropriate procedure that will help to achieve a natural and appropriate result, increasing the beauty and joviality of the face.

“We tailor our surgical plans and procedures by considering the singularity and the needs of each patient,” shares Dr. Marco.

Dr. Marco is a pragmatic surgeon who has mastered the traditional open and minimally invasive methods of Plastic Surgery by applying the latest techniques for properly hiding the scars in the anatomical folds and crease of the skin, leaving inconspicuous scars.
