West Side Story The Musical Wed 13 Sept - Oct Various Timings

Published - 09 January 2018, Tuesday

A boy. A girl. Two rival gangs. One fatal love affair.

Described as 'The No.1 Greatest Musical of all Time' by The Times, UK, WEST SIDE STORY is as relevant today as it has ever been.

Inspired by Shakespeare's tumultuous love story Romeo and Juliet, and set amidst the vicious rivalry of teenage gangs in 1950s New York, WEST SIDE STORY's ground-breaking choreography and unforgettable score changed the face of musical theatre for ever when it burst onto the Broadway stage in 1957.

Thoroughly enjoyed the West Side Story performance at Marina Bay Sands. Maria had an incredible voice and I'd forgotten how many amazing songs are in it.

WEST SIDE STORY, MasterCard Theatre @ Marina Bay Sands, 21 September 2017

Drama, intolerance, love, hatred, exuberance, tragedy, beautiful harmonious vocals, tight choreography and atmospheric set, staging and lighting design, West Side Story@ Marina Bay Sands MasterCard Theatre has all the vital ingredients for an amazing, memorable night out at the theatre.

West Side Story, originally inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet is set in the modern world of Upper West Side of New York City in the late 1950’s. With the award-winning music score from Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the story follows the rivalry between two teenage gangs, the Jets (from New York) and the Sharks (from Puerto Rico) and the increasingly violent rift between the Jet gang leader Riff and the Shark gang leader Bernardo. Caught in the violent centre of the growing Jet vs Shark inter-gang hatred is the beautiful yet doomed love story of Maria (Bernardo’s young sister) and Tony (Riff’s best friend and former Jet gang member).

With more highs than a turbo charged rocket, from beautiful vocals from Marc Koeck (Tony), Jenna Burns (Maria) and Keely Beirne (Anita) which are so passionately performed they make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end and tingle!, to slick, tight, polished, exuberant big cast dance numbers where the dancers give their everything, to the twists and turns of the dramatic love story of Tony and Maria and the inter-gang rivalry, not to mention the complex set design and poignant, dramatic lighting design, you will be mermerised, tearful and fully immersed in the rollercoaster West Side Story action from start to finish! From the opening number to the final encore, the passion of the cast obviously transcends from the stage to the audience alike.

With award-winning, classic uplifting and dramatic songs coming thick and fast, one after the other, from “Maria”, to “America” to “Somewhere” to “Tonight” to “I feel Pretty” to “One Hand, One Heart,” I had to try my best to resist the very strong temptation to sing along, until driving home in the taxi.

All in all, West Side Story is a fabulous, memorable night out for fans of classic musical theatre. The show is packed full of a cast exuding star quality, who together deliver an outstanding performance. This ensures West Side Story still continues to rock the audience, nearly 60 years after the original Broadway Production.

Singapore friends - buy or steal a ticket! Do whatever you need to do to ensure you get a seat in the house for this outstanding production of West Side Story, which must end 30 September!

**Edited now that I've watched

It was okay.. I wouldn't recommend it. For the price you pay you feel like you should get more than an amateur production.

I felt that the voices were not strong enough to pull off a production of this size.

I felt that the voices of Maria and Tony did not mesh very well and the Puerto Rican accents were a little laughable at times.
The only saving grace was Anita.

I've heard that this is a top drawer touring production. Direct from USA. Can't wait.
