Lovely historic atmosphere, though due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is with great sadness that currently The Hotel is temporary closed.
FROM A DISTINGUISHED BEGINNING...
It was the ancestral home of descendents of Tan Kim Seng Esq. (1805 - 1864 ), a third generation Straits Chinese born in Melaka. His grandfather migrated to Melaka in the 18th century from the Eng Choon district of Fujian province, China, where he became a very successful businessman.
AND TODAY
This building is known as Hotel Puri. There is an air well to let in air and light. A water well still exist and is now standing in the History Room. Where the Sekaya Garden and the L-shaped wing is today, was an open area used as a stable for the Tan family horses, and parking area for horse carriages. In addition, it also housed a mini zoo which many said, to have included a tiger and several deers.
During refurbishment and development of the hotel, extreme care was taken to conserve the unique architecture as much as possible. The building from the front to the inner court of the ancestral hall was carefully reinstated preserving the original structures together with its carved doorways, windows, partitions and interestingly sculptured airwell.
Chinese couplets of good fortune, health and happiness adorning doors, windows and entrances similar to the residences in China, were meticulously restored. The mosaic floor and wall tiles were arduously cleaned and polished. The mosaic tiles were imported from 19th century England.
