Guide to Yangon, Myanmar

  • Yangon

As an expat, it can be difficult making it all the way back home be it America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe or the British Isles especially now when the new norm is upon us. When borders open or for those expats already living in Myanmar, Yangon might be the perfect destination for a change of scenary.

The largest, and most populous, city in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma – Yangon is home to the largest number of colonial-era buildings in Southeast Asia, many of which are still functional and make up a large part of the city’s urban core.

One of the most interesting facets of Yangon is its diversity: get a glimpse of culture and history at the Shwedagon Pagoda, which houses strands of Buddha’s hair, dine at a Michelin starred Chef’s restaurant, or enjoy a glimpse of what life is like for the locals at Kandawgyi Park. Since Yangon was previously inaccessible for over fifty years due to Myanmar’s isolationist policy, the city is a veritable goldmine of experiences for the astute traveler. Based on tips from our Expat Choice ambassadors, we’d suggest you plan your visit between October and February to avoid the scorching summer, and don’t forget to get an early start to the day to make the most of your visit!

Sights to See

Kandawgyi Park

This lush, beautiful garden is a popular location amongst locals and tourists alike. Spread across an area of 260 acres, Kandawgyi Lake occupies a majority of Kandawgyi Park. Karaweik Hall is a royal barge located amidst the lake that resembles a mythical bird, and offers up the perfect example of Myanmar architecture. Get a glimpse of the golden tomb of the Shwedagon Pagoda, and take your kids to visit the mini-zoo and playground on the premises.

Shwedagon Pagoda

This ancient Buddhist shrine is one of the most revered in the country of Myanmar. Once a mere 8.2 metres high, Shwedagon Pagoda today stands at a lofty 110 meters. Covered with hundreds of gold plates, and with the top of the stupa studded with diamonds, this magnificent architectural, and religious, structure is not to be missed. Apart from housing strands of Buddha’s hair, Shwedagon Pagoda is also home to other holy relics. Take in the sights from 4 am to 10 pm, and err on the side of caution when it comes the dress code.

Located north of Kandawgyi Lake, the 65-meter-long reclining image of Buddha is the main attraction at Chauk Htat Kyi Pagoda, and one of the largest in Burma. Pay close attention to the red and gold soles of the feet which contain 108 lakshanas or auspicious characteristics of the Buddha. If you have a knack for photography, head around the compound behind the Buddha head for a look at Ngar Htat Gyi Pagoda Gateway, and the view of Shwedagon Pagoda from afar.

I'm a huge fan of Yangon. I hope to live in Yangon for a year and be fully involved in the vibrant expatriate community and the wider Burmese community. Yangon has a beauty and a vibrancy about it. There is something interesting at every turn and many repatriated Burmese make bold decisions to create business opportunity for people living in and returning to Yangon. I have stayed personally at Highland Lodge and also at Zealax which sits at the other end of the scale. I loved both experiences as they offer their own unique comfort. Hotel G is a good reliable stay and excellent Western/french inspired menu. An expat feel here but great to see so many of the emerging local crowd loving this venue as a go to for cocktails and excellent pizza. etc. I am longing for the day I can walk through the airport and see all my friends in Yangon. Stay safe xxx
