Gardens by the Bay's Sakura floral show, now in its ninth year, offers a unique day-to-night experience, attracting guests from sunrise to sunset with the appeal of cherry blossoms. This year's exhibit is inspired by the picturesque city of Kyoto and features the famed Kinkakuji Temple, letting visitors to immerse themselves in the ambiance of this UNESCO World Heritage site.
As nightfall falls, the landscape transforms into a mesmerising spectacle, recreating the essence of "yozakura" (night sakura) in Japan, with specially lighted trees and ethereal light projections that come alive beneath the evening sky.
Ms Indranee Rajah, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister for National Development and Finance, opened the Sakura floral display with a ceremonial breaking of a sake barrel, accompanied by dignitaries such as Ambassador of Japan to Singapore, His Excellency Hiroshi Ishikawa, Gardens by the Bay Chairman, Mr Niam Chiang Meng, and CEO, Mr Felix Loh. Mr Loh expressed enthusiasm for this year's event, highlighting Singaporeans' affinity for Japanese culture and the introduction of 'yozakura', which promises an exceptional experience for guests.
The flower show, which features over 140 cherry blossom trees of diverse types, including audience favourites Prunus Accolade and Prunus Kiku Shidare, creates a gorgeous image reminiscent of Japanese landscapes. Visitors can also see a new addition this year, the European plum blossom species Prunus domestica, which adds variation to the floral arrangement. Traditional Japanese elements such as Miyama Village's thatched house and meditative verandas convey Kyoto's calm beauty.
As the day fades into night, the Flower Dome transforms into a mesmerising show, with soft lights illuminating the flower trees and dazzling projections bringing the ground alive. Visitors can win a pair of economy class tickets to Japan from the official airline partner, All Nippon Airways, which adds an intriguing incentive to the experience.
Japanese cultural programmes and the much-anticipated return of Anime Garden round off the Sakura floral show. Visitors can enjoy traditional tea ceremonies, music performances, and displays of Japanese traditions, all organised in partnership with the Embassy of Japan in Singapore. Anime fans may rejoice as Anime Garden returns to the Supertree Grove, showcasing a roster of regional cosplay artists and Japanese artists, as well as a lively marketplace selling souvenirs and wonderful Japanese cuisine.
The Sakura floral display 2024, a collaboration between All Nippon Airways and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Singapore Foundation, promises to enchant visitors with its blend of natural beauty and cultural richness, providing an immersive journey into the heart of Japan's springtime splendour.
