The Down Syndrome Association Singapore (DSA) is preparing to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on Thursday 21 March, 2024, with an exciting "Rock Your Socks" campaign. This program invites people to celebrate diversity by wearing mismatched socks symbolizing the uniqueness of differently ordered chromosomes. Under the theme 'End Stereotypes'. 'We are just like you.', the campaign attempts to shine light on the unique path of people with Down syndrome.
The United Nations observes World Down Syndrome Day each year on March 21st to honour the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome. Evelyn Lai, Executive Director of DSA, emphasises that prejudices can prevent people with Down syndrome from realising their full potential. She claims that having Down syndrome or any other special needs is only one part of a person's identity. People with Down syndrome have distinct personalities, interests, preferences, gifts, and talents that merit recognition and appreciation.
The 'Rock Your Socks' initiative is a fun way to raise awareness for Down Syndrome. Participants wear vivid, mismatched socks to accept differences while also expressing support with the Down Syndrome community. These vibrant socks, chosen for their likeness to chromosomes, reflect the different qualities and talents of people with Down syndrome.
Supporting the "Rock Your Socks" effort is simple but effective. Individuals can buy specially designed DSA socks made by members with Down syndrome. Participants are also urged to share their colourful mismatched sock ensembles on social media with hashtags like #WorldDownSyndromeDay, #EndtheStereotypesWereJustLikeYou, and #RockYourSocks, tagging @downsyndromesingapore to spread the message of inclusivity.
In addition to the 'Rock Your Socks' campaign, the DSA will hold the WDSD 2024 Carnival at One Punggol on Saturday, 23rd March, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Buddy Walk is the carnival's main attraction, representing companionship along the developmental journey of people with Down syndrome and their families. With an expected 500 attendees, including members, beneficiaries, partners, and community members, the event promises a lively atmosphere packed with talent displays, games, and stalls selling crafts and food.
There are several ways for individuals who want to support the DSA's good mission to become involved. Individuals can create fundraising campaigns on platforms such as giving.sg or give.asia, make direct donations, buy DSA products, or sign up for the Buddy Walk. All money raised support DSA's aim to serve as a Centre of Excellence for people with Down syndrome, their families, and the community.
