Packing Tips For Relocating To and From Singapore

Published - 09 January 2018, Tuesday

Packing up your belongings and moving to a new home in a foreign land can often be a very stressful and time-consuming task. With proper planning and organising, the moving experience may just be a little less painful.

Here are a few tips and tricks that you could use to save you some time, and also money!

Tip 1 - Categorise & Pack

Dividing your belongings into different categories and packing them accordingly is a great way to start. Items from the kitchen should be packed in their respective boxes, separated from the items from the bedroom. By doing so, not only will you be able to then label the boxes clearly, you’d also be able to unpack them easier without having to go through the process of separating the items once more.

Tip 2 - Fragile Items

Fragile items require more TLC. One way to protect your fragile items is by wrapping them with bubble wrap, along with adding in crumpled newspaper on the bottom and top of the box for that extra cushion. You could even consider using a blanket or soft towel to line the inside of the box to provide that extra layer of protection. Better to be safe than sorry!

Tip 3 – Daily Essentials

Once your items have been moved to your new place, it would often take quite a while to get everything unpacked and arranged neatly. Packing essential items into one clearly labelled box would allow you to gain access to these items easily without the need to unpack everything immediately. Some of the items you might consider to include in this box are:

  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Toilet paper
  • Shampoo
  • Shower gel
  • Towel
  • A few sets of fresh and clean clothing
  • Your favourite teddy bear! (we don’t judge)

Tip 4 - Large Box/Small Box

The common practice is to fill each and every box to the brim to minimise the number of boxes used. Just ensure it is not too heavy, the ends are properly sealed, and that you can lift those boxes without injuring yourself.

Here’s the golden rule: Fill large boxes with light stuff, and small boxes with heavy stuff.

Tip 5 - Declutter

When moving from one place to another, we would usually pack every single thing we have to bring over to the new home. Why not take this time to declutter and put aside some of those things that you rarely use, but can’t seem to let them go altogether? Perhaps donate some items to charity as well!

You can do sorting easily by setting aside boxes labelled as follows:

  • Give Away or Sell
  • Keep and Store

With these boxes, the process of filtering and getting rid of unnecessary clutter is made simple and easy.  Keep these tips on hand for when you’re ready to pack, we know it’ll be of great help in your journey of moving to a new home. Bon Voyage!
