Moving halfway around the world in this age of technology is a completely different experience to what it would have been like even thirty years ago.

The explosion of digital methods of communication, for instance, means that people can contact home and remain immersed in their local communities even while sitting on a beach in the other hemisphere. But what might expats miss the most from leaving Britain – and how can they ensure they can still engage with it?

British Food

British food might not be the most striking in the world – especially compared to some of the most culturally rich cuisines available, but it does evoke fondness. Adverts from the Second World War focused on Brits abroad missing staple British foods, such as Bisto gravy, and this trend of enjoying British favorites abroad has continued.

The proliferation of expats overseas, especially across Asia, means that there has already been someone to pave the way for British classics such as a Full English, Marco Pierre White at The English House roast dinner with Yorkshire puddings in Singapore, and traditional fish and chips. For example, as the restaurant Thai Fish and Chips Bangkok shows, there is a market for British favorites as far afield as Thailand.

A survey found a list of the food and drink missed most by expats living abroad. The list was topped by tea, chocolate, marmite, gravy, and biscuits. But most of those are available – especially given how tea is grown in Asia and has a long cultural heritage there. Globalization means that, even across the world, you’re not that far from staple British foods.

British Games

Britain is also known for its sports. This includes world-renowned rugby, football, and quintessential British classics like cricket. Another aspect of British culture is the casino and its online equivalents that provide an experience that is on the rise among Brits.

Luckily, there are still ways in which to engage with the online casino industry, for example, worlds away in Asia. As the guide to some of the world’s best online casinos shows, many of the most recommended and most popular sites accept payment from all over Asia; from Chinese renminbi to the New Taiwan Dollar according to CasinoTopsOnline.

Being able to pay for sites in the currency of the country is important and ensures that expats in Asia can engage with aspects of British culture that they might not experience in the same way. While Asia has its own range of gaming experiences, such as Chinese domino game Pai Gow and the Indian three-card brag equivalent Teen Patti, many expats still prefer the classics.

One of the main considerations for those living abroad is what they might miss from Britain. Communication means they can still see and speak to friends and family, even British TV can be viewed abroad. Trickier things, such as British food and British games might be harder to come by, but they’re still not completely out of bounds for Brits abroad. Whether it’s a cup of tea or a game of bingo, there are ways to engage with British culture halfway around the world.
