Modern Times uniquely pairs contemporary Australian art and design with vintage European design furniture.
With diverse backgrounds spanning music, events, art, design and hospitality, owners Joel and Amy Malin began Modern Times with a series of pop-up shops in 2010.
By 2012 they had permanently set up shop on Smith Street in Fitzroy. Modern Times is now known as a Melbourne institution showcasing beautifully restored furniture alongside the work of Australia’s best contemporary artists and makers.
The distinctive mid-century style of Scandinavian furniture fits into all kinds of interiors whether it’s contemporary minimalism or the total mid-century look.
At Modern Times, customers can find everything from sideboards to sofas and coffee tables in the beautiful teak and rosewood designs of the fifties and sixties.
The space is brought to life with the work of contemporary Australian artists and designers whose work is specially chosen to complement the mid-century style - paintings, prints, ceramics, textiles, glassware and jewellery.
