The award-winning smart sanitiser business Speco® from Singapore recently unveiled its Ambient Sanitization Technology, which offers airborne antiviral sanitisation without time-consuming, labour-intensive manual disinfection procedures.

Speco® Ion automates disinfection and simplify routine and regular sanitisation. Speco Ion can be operated even when businesses are open, as its products are non-toxic and safe for inhalation and prolonged exposure. As it combines multiple air filtration techniques into one, including UV light (UV) purification, ionic clusters, carbon filtering for germs, and volatile organic compounds, the device surpasses many other air purifiers on the market. It is the first dual air purifier and sanitizer machine in the world when used with a disinfection and sanitizing module.

According to Benjamin Chua, Chief Executive Officer at Speco®, the company wants to raise awareness of the risks associated with excessive cleaning and sanitising, a problem that Singaporeans are becoming increasingly concerned about. Additionally, it reaffirms its dedication to keeping the workplace virus-free and safe.

Increasing worries about over-sanitisation

The standards and the need for disinfection have become imperative since the pandemic outbreak. But many individuals are worried about the widespread use of chemicals in disinfection.

In 2020, more than 5,000 cases of exposure to chlorine gas during cleaning were reported to poison control centres, with two of those cases ending in death. According to studies, the most widely used disinfection chemicals are linked to impaired immunological and metabolic processes in mice, a greater incidence of asthma, and lower fertility in humans.

The company created Speco® Ion in response to concerns over disinfection. With a predetermined amount of solution appropriate for the space, the ambient sanitisation technology may automate and administer disinfection operations at predetermined times, ensuring that cleaning is done regularly throughout the day. The method avoids overexposure and over-infection by using only moderate chemicals.

Speco® Ion has proven to be highly effective in disinfecting residential spaces of up to 93 square meters. This innovative solution was recently utilized in various settings with remarkable outcomes. For instance, a child-care center experienced an outbreak of foot and mouth disease, affecting ten children. However, by implementing Speco® Ion for a period of three months, the child-care center successfully mitigated the outbreak and restored a safe environment for the children. Furthermore, a government building that was struggling to meet the Singapore Standard Council's Code SS554 for Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) managed to pass the assessment after integrating Speco® Ion into their air purification systems. This notable achievement highlights the efficacy of Speco® Ion in improving indoor air quality and maintaining a healthy environment.

In July, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) recently shortlisted Speco® to represent Singapore at the Global IP Awards 2023 in Geneva, Switzerland. The prize honours outstanding small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), artists, designers, and inventors who use intellectual property rights to advance their commercial objectives.
