In our continuing series featuring businesses and services in Singapore supporting the local International communities, Expat Choice shares how Osteopathy can Relieve Jaw Pain. Even Covid can’t rob you of life’s little pleasures such as eating, sleeping and talking to those you love.

Unless you suffer from any of the following, in which case such essential everyday activities become a “right pain in the jaw”:

  • Reduced range of motion when talking or chewing
  • Discomfort around the jaw area
  • Pain when opening or closing your mouth
  • Protruding or recessed jaw
  • Involuntary clicking, crunching or grinding of teeth
  • Residual pain from tooth extraction, dental surgery or facial trauma

Worse still, referred pain from the mouth area can cause temporal pain, headaches and neck strain. Andrea Lliso, a UK trained osteopath at City Osteopathy and Physiotherapy’s Novena clinic says:

“I became an osteopath because I suffered from musculoskeletal and visceral issues when I was younger, and osteopathy relieved me a great number of times. I became fascinated by how osteopaths could feel and treat the body only using manual techniques. After talking with a family friend who is a dentist, I realised that many of her patients could benefit from osteopathy. The teeth, jaws and neck functions are all closely corelated.”

Andrea uses examination and gentle palpation techniques to assess the position and mobility of the neck, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the hyoid bone (u-shaped bone in the neck which supports the tongue). He may massage or articulate the TMJ from the inside of the mouth as shown here. It’s not painful and if at any point you feel uncomfortable, he can switch to a different method. After diagnosis, he develops treatment plans to restore tissue functionality, resulting in better movement and reduced discomfort.

To ensure long term positive outcomes, he also explains jaw movement exercises and specific muscle massages which will keep your jaw and muscles functioning as perfectly as possible.
