We have always loved a good Greek meal, the climate in Singapore seems just perfect for an al fresco Mediterranean feast. And it’s even better when the meal can be seaside, with the salty breeze, gentle laps of the ocean and boats rocking in rhyme almost transporting one to the Greek isles. We found just a spot recently at Mykonos On The Bay at Sentosa Cove.
Admittedly it has been a long while since I’ve visited Sentosa Cove but boy was this place buzzing, even on a Wednesday night the lights were dazzling, the restaurants were alive and the atmosphere was pulsating – a real destination dining experience and a far cry from it’s early days with only a few establishments on offer.
Mykonos On The Bay is easy to spot with its clean, white furnishings and touches of the famous Greek blue. We were seated at a lovely high table outside with views directly to the Marina, a balmy evening breeze accompanied by a crisp Greek Chardonnay immediately had us in vacay mode.
Our hostess Karel, was a friendly breath of fresh air and quickly highlighted some of the menu’s most popular offerings. We started with the Htapodaki – chargrilled Mediterranean octopus served with a pickled octopus terrine. I am normally not a big octopus fan as can often find it too rubbery – but this was excellent – juicy, tender and with that right amount of chargrill to give it a slightly earthy, BBQ taste.
The Graveria Saganaki and Garides Saganaki were joyful new discoveries – pan-fried “Graveria” cheese, glazed with ouzo and lemon juice – a tantalising combination with the saltiness of the cheese adeptly dancing with the citrus of the lemon and the liquorice taste of the ouzo. The Garides version paired succulent tiger prawns with feta and ouzo tomato sauce.
Our final appetizer was one of the loveliest dip platters we have seen – perfect triangles of homemade pita bread standing enticingly upright behind a trio of classic dips including Tzatziki, Taramosalata (fish roe) and Melitzanosalata (eggplant).
Already feeling more than satisfied with the hearty appetizers, we shared the Stifado as a main – a melt in your mouth slow braised lamb shank in tomato sauce, served with caramelized shallots and potato puree.
Desserts were both a visual and flavourful delight – a classic Pagato Giaourti – home-made Greek yoghurt and honey ice cream served with walnuts and sponge cake and an indulgent Olive Oil and Chocolate mousse with citrus fillets, preserved grape fruit eel and sea salt flakes. Simply stunning!
This was a superb and relaxing Greek dining experience with many of the dishes being presented in a far more delicate and beautiful manner than one would expect at a seaside taverna. With great service, a truly authentic Greek menu for both the food and wine we now indeed have a great excuse to catch up with our Sentosa Cove friends more often.
