My husband and I are BIG burger fans and it’s often a staple for a lazy Sunday night takeout or weekend post big night out lunch. But too often we have found many burgers just don’t cut the mustard – soggy, lacking flavour or just a bit meh.

Taking a staycation recently at Hotel Soloha near the bustling foodie street of Keong Saik Road, we ventured in search of a fabulous lunch experience and happened across Three Buns at Potato Head.

Now most of us know the famous Potato Head in Bali and have enjoyed long lazy afternoons sipping cocktails and tasting their delicious fare. Potato Head in Singapore of course doesn’t have the same beachside views, but it certainly brings that beach club vibe into the heart of Chinatown.

Stepping into the premise, we are captivated by curious and eclectic works of art, many by the famous Australian artist David Bromley. Three Buns is located on the middle floor and has wild indigo birds and butterflies flitting around its walls, within a slightly retro 90’s hip-hop style dining scene. Friendly staff greet us and we are comforted by the warm and casual atmosphere.

One look at the menus and the we know we are in for some tough choices. For starters is the awesome value lunch set – at $24++ for a main, side and non-alcoholic beverage it’s immensely good value (add just another $10++ to get an alcoholic beverage) and it could easily become a regular lunch haunt for those in the area.

We peruse the extensive menu of burgers – pitched as East meets West or badass burgers with Asian twists – there are numerous enticing flavours on offer. I opt for one of the most popular choices being the Truff Ryder featuring a Tasmanian vintage beef patty, seared foie gras, house truffle cheese, truffled onion marmalade, lettuce, ketchup and den miso mayo in a toasted demi brioche bun.

While the husband goes for Fun Boy Three – a Tasmanian Vintage beef patty, smoked Applewood cheddar, roasted portobello mushroom, garlic miso butter, double ketchup and truffle aioli in a toasted demi brioche bun.

These sound quite simply epic and when they arrive they are more than epic. Picture perfect, succulent, juicy mounds of burger goodness tempt our tastebuds and have us hastily devouring them.

Even my husband who never takes a food photo, took a stunning visual of his flawless burger. The fries are worthy of an article in themselves and are almost a complete meal – we chose the Naughty Fries (because why not??) – a delectable combination of spiced béarnaise, hot beef chilli, bawang goreng, Oro del Maso parmesan and sesame seeds.

Wow what a combo! To feel slightly less naughty we did add on the Broc Party – this is broccoli like we’ve never had it before – charred broccoli, den miso mayo, Oro del Maso parmesan, calamansi, toasted almonds and chilli.

To wash this satiating feast down we knocked back several of the stunning artisanal cocktails – our joint favourite being the newly crafted Hella Good which blends Nusa Caña Tropical Rum, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, saline, Peychaud’s bitters, mango puree, jalapeño juice and fresh lime juice into a spicy and sour refreshing temptation.

The more ladylike Suga Suga combines Hendrick’s Gin, Giffard Raspberry Liqueur, peach bitters, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup and tonic and quickly brings back those beachside Bali memories.

It's official, we are big fans so if you’re looking for the baddest burgers in town along with some slamming cocktails – Three Buns cannot be missed. We will most definitely be visiting and ordering in from these guys again.
