NEW OPENING  |  DINING  |  MARINA BAY

Hong Kong's favourite Cali-Mexican hotspot has officially landed at Asia Square Tower 1. Boasting a serious cocktail menu built by a PDT New York alum and tableside guacamole mixed right in front of you, here is what is actually worth ordering in the heart of the CBD.

The guacamole arrives before you have even had a chance to loosen your tie. Not from the kitchen, but from a chef who wheels a cart directly to your table, unpacks a heavy stone molcajete, and gets to work. Fresh avocado, lime, a proper kick of chilli, cilantro and red onion, all mashed to order while you watch. Honestly? It is easily the best way a meal has ever started for me in a CBD restaurant, and it sets the pace for the night at 11 Westside, which opened this June at Asia Square Tower 1 and is already pulling in serious after-work crowds.

The concept started in Hong Kong's Kennedy Town, where the original 11 Westside became a neighbourhood favourite known for handmade tortillas, well-made agave drinks, and the kind of energy that keeps people around for one more round. Singapore is only the second city to get it. The name has always carried its own story: '11' is the original address in Kennedy Town; 'Westside' is Los Angeles, where Baja California cooking found its urban identity.

"Ten dollars. House-made tortilla, pressed fresh to order. This is the best-value bite in Marina Bay and it is not particularly close."

Heading up the kitchen is Chef Yong Soo Do, Group Executive Chef of Liberty Group, who is also, at the time of writing, competing on Game of Flame: 100 Chefs Battle, one of China's biggest culinary TV series judged by Alvin Leung. He works from a menu built in collaboration with Chef Esdras Ochoa, the Mexican-born chef who gave 11 Westside its culinary foundation. The brief in Singapore is to stay true to that foundation while keeping up with one of Asia's most competitive dining scenes.

He pulls it off. Tortillas are pressed fresh to order from masa flour brought in directly from Mexico. The chillies in the salsas and marinades travel the same route because, as Chef Yong explains, there is no credible substitute. Everything on the plate is made from scratch: slow-marinated meats, grilled seafood, fresh salsas, house pickles. You taste the effort.

What to Order at 11 Westside Singapore

Start with the Tableside Guacamole ($26). It is the restaurant's calling card and it earns the reputation. The process itself is half the appeal: watching it get built in front of you, adjusting the seasoning, scooping it warm onto a chip that still has heat from the fryer. From there, the Hamachi Ceviche ($32) hits hard for how clean it tastes: citrus-cured fish, fresh jalapeño and avocado, arriving cold and sharp after the richness of the guac.

The tacos are what 11 Westside is actually about, and the Baja Fish Taco ($10) is the one to start with. Beer-battered fish, cabbage slaw, chipotle aioli, on a tortilla pressed to order. Ten dollars. This is the best-value bite in Marina Bay and it is not particularly close. The Al Pastor ($9) and Carnitas ($9) are both worth adding to the order if you are sitting down for a proper meal.

For something larger, the Chargrilled Octopus ($34) is the kitchen at its most confident: adobo glaze, salsa verde, pickled shallots, a herb salad, and a char that runs deep. The Fire Roasted Chicken ($44) comes on a wooden board with warm tortillas and a green herb sauce good enough to request a separate bowl of. It is made for sharing and handles the table accordingly.

Do not skip the Churros III Ways ($18) on the way out. Freshly fried, served with caramel sauce, popcorn and vanilla ice cream. It sounds like too much and it is exactly right.

The Drinks at 11 Westside Singapore

The cocktail menu comes from Daniel Eun, who founded the Hong Kong original and spent time as head bartender at Please Don't Tell (PDT) in New York, a bar that built its reputation on agave spirits and reservation-only sour-style drinks before that combination became standard practice everywhere else. You can feel the influence in how the menu at 11 Westside is constructed: clean, citrus-forward, built to work alongside food rather than fight with it.

The Smoky Tajin Margarita ($18) is the one to open with. Mezcal base, triple sec, lime juice and a tajin-salt rim that earns its place rather than just sitting there for appearance. The smoke comes through but does not take over. The Paloma ($18), tequila and grapefruit with lime, is the crisper option and just as well-made. Both disappear faster than expected.

The Space

11 Westside runs 133 indoor seats and 88 on the alfresco terrace, built around a central bar that keeps the energy moving across the whole room. Arched walkways, warm pendant lights and textured walls borrow loosely from Mexican hacienda architecture without tipping into theme-restaurant territory. There is a large figurative mural in the main dining room that reads as dramatic and deliberate; it is the last thing you would expect at the base of an office tower on Marina View and it works better for being unexpected.

The terrace is pet-friendly, which makes 11 Westside one of genuinely few places in the CBD where you can bring your dog to a proper dinner rather than just a coffee. Live music nights and DJ sets are in the calendar for the months ahead.

The Verdict

11 Westside works because it is not trying to be everything. It is a taco bar and cocktail destination that takes both seriously, sits in a part of the city that badly needed one, and delivers on the basics with enough consistency to keep people coming back. The tableside guacamole is the thing that will get you through the door the first time. The rest of the menu is the reason you will already be planning the next visit before the bill arrives.
