Iza Izakaya (居酒屋) one of the very best Japanese Restaurants on the East Coast has a NEW MENU and Chef for 2023. It is now available from the beginning of March. Yes, Amos and the team have finally launched the new menu, and they have launched successfully.
We now have an incredible new menu to investigate at Iza in Siglap, and boy, did we do that today. The new menu is PACKED with new items, some of which stray from the traditional Japanese fare.Â
See what I mean. How far from Japanese Izakaya is this? The Japanese word Izakaya (居酒屋) is made up of three kanji that indicate "stay-drink-place" in that order. A place to take a drink, settle in, and relax. Based on our interactions with Iza in Siglap, this sounds about correct.
But is lamb chops encrusted with pistachio crumb a Japanese dish? Far from it, in my humble opinion. But, to be honest, who cares... It's amazing food on the new menu at iza Siglap.

Back to planet Japan. Cold Soba; Wasabi, spring onion, and an onsen egg. My daughter was so impressed that she ordered two helpings. It's also beautiful plating, a little culinary theatre as you mix the ingredients together at the table yourself.
Beef Tataki is beef fillet topped with ponzu sauce and rocket leaves. This one gets a thumbs up from me. Simply delectable. It was fantastic. Perhaps a little more seasoning would have improved this. Wifey has now requested that Amos and Mary (the owners) reproduce this with a Tuna Tataki dish. She's so pushy.

BOSH. Up next is the new Chicken Gyoza. Dumplings pan-fried and garnished with ginger and vinegar. Oh no, my Japanese mother is ultimately up against a rival. I used to think my Mum had the best Gyoza on the globe, until these bad boys appeared on the menu.
These Gyoza are absolutely beautiful. Hand-made (I verified that last night) and savoury, with the chew and crunch of the perfect pot-stickers (the cheeky name for Gyoza). QUALITY!!!
