The Timeless Pavilion Phnom Penh

Published - 25 April 2021, Sunday

Pavilion Phnom Penh is located in the heart of the historical center of Phnom Penh, just a few steps from the Royal Palace and facing Wat Botum, the Royal Pagoda.

Add to that the gratifying harmony of French-Khmer historic architecture, the friendliness and dedication of its staff, and you have a home away from home, where every moment is lived effortlessly, where the traveller feels like a special guest in a private abode.

Pavilion Phnom Penh offers two large swimming pools, each one with its own atmosphere and set in a distinct part of the property. The first one, fronting the reception building, is shaded by tall trees all around.

We came to call it the Lush Pool, an expanse of tropical vegetation and translucent water.  Behind the reception building, the Sun Pool boasts a vast sunbathing area.

Flows of natural light illuminate its aquamarine, slate-tiled basin. Heating or cooling water system is needless, here or in any of our pools — you will always find the water temperature perfectly phased with climatic conditions.

Start the day with a generous a-la-carte breakfast by the Lush Pool. Later on, our two poolside lounges serve in a quiet environment drinks, cocktails, Khmer and Western light meals.

Located in an adjoining building by the reception, our spa offers a gentle environment for massages or relaxation treatments after an intense day in the city.

Our masseuses focus on a few tested and appreciated options, especially designed for our clientele.

With its assumed simplicity, the air-conditioned exercise room is here for those who want to stay fit and agile without leaving our oasis.

Treadmill, bike, weights, yoga mat, weighing scale: the basics, but within such a peaceful setting. Video Credit - hey samnang Photo Credit - Pavilion Phnom Penh Facebook Page.

This is a hidden oasis in the middle of the bustling, busy city of Phnom Penh. The greenery around the hotel helps calm and cool you down. All the staff were helpful, polite, and thoughtful. The building has a rich history, going back to French colony era. The rooms were spacious, clean, and comfortable. The two pools are clean, the bar was well stocked and tuk-tuks at the ready right outside the hotel whenever you needed to go somewhere.

It all started when we fell in love with a hidden gem of French-Khmer architecture from the 1920s, near Wat Botum, one of the most venerable and original pagodas in Phnom Penh. Renovation and remodelling were led with due respect for the character of a building which had been, as we learnt it later on, a private retreat for Queen Consort Sisowath Kossamak, the late King Sihanouk's mother. In a city where architectural heritage has been too often squandered during the last decade, here is a testimony that we can go the other way, for us and for the next generations. Opened 18 Aug. 2006 with 10 rooms, Pavilion has slowly expanded over the years, offering now 36 rooms and suites throughout three more period buildings that have been added to the property: "The New House", former residence of the chief veterinarian at the Royal Palace; "The New Villa", formerly the private residence of a Cambodian senator, and "The Sun-Pool Villa", our latest addition which used to be lodgings for diplomats based in Phnom Penh.
