Singapore Musical Box Museum

Published - 29 January 2018, Monday

Musical Boxes were an important symbol of European culture dating back to the 19th century and early 20th century.

Historical resources have shown that Singapore played an integral part in the progress and development of musical boxes in South-east Asia during that time frame.

In this Singapore’s first musical box museum, the founders aim to share the historical background from the rise to the fall of the musical boxes to how it made its way to Singapore in the 19th century to the public.

I happened to stumble upon the Singapore Musical Box Museum and the Museum Shop at Singapore Musical Box Museum on Telok Ayer and it was just a wonderful experience, a great way to spend a few free hours on Friday afternoon. I found out all the history associated with Musical Box Technology... if you can call it that. These instruments were used in public houses, like afternoon tea houses and the like in Asia but originated in Switzerland first in 1796. Incredible sound and the articulation of the notes being delivered on the mechanisms is spot on. Theses instruments are housed in this original museum funded by a private collector and you will need to book a time for the 45 minute guided tour....There is also a great Cafe which sells Peranakan snacks and quite bizarrely Original Tiles...for splash backs and the like when renovating

Quite the extraordinary experience. You need to book a guided tour here. You will experience 45 minutes of the history of these fascinating instruments. The musical boxes are awesome. They play like a pianola and were very popular in the 19th and 20th century. This is a great way to get in touch was another side of what Singapore has to offer.
