Singapore Art Museum (SAM) joyfully announces the upcoming opening of its new collection exhibition at Tanjong Pagar Distripark, demonstrating its dedication to developing its contemporary art collection. The gallery will feature gifts from prestigious collectors, resulting in a wide and distinct collection that reflects modern global art practices.

SAM's new collection gallery intends to enhance perspectives on global art practices by emphasising the region's perspective while also including artworks from Southeast Asia and beyond. The collection aims to provide meaningful thoughts on contemporary life and society by following the growth of art in today's world.

The new space's inaugural exhibition will showcase a wide range of media, locations, and issues, emphasising contemporary art's dynamic expressions. Recently given pieces by notable collector Hallam Chow will highlight SAM's active engagement with donors, enriching the collection and broadening its narrative boundaries.

Eugene Tan, SAM's Director, expresses the museum's aim to curating a varied collection that represents contemporary practices around the world while focusing on Southeast Asian views.

The collection, which includes donations from notable figures such as Hallam Chow, strives to investigate the role of art in society and inspire active participation in evaluating contemporary artistic forms. Chow's recent donation, the largest in SAM history, includes pieces by renowned Asian artists such as Sun Xun, Nishio Yasuyuki, Tehching Hsieh, and The Propeller Group.

The collection represents critical artistic practices and discourses, providing insight into Southeast Asia's interconnectedness with the larger artistic world. SAM's collection also includes contributions from well-known figures such as Sameer Sain and Haryanto Adikoesoemo, broadening its narrative span to encompass South Asian and internationally recognised modern works. These contributions strengthen SAM's ability to pivot key moments in global contemporary art processes, providing varied perspectives to audiences in Singapore and beyond.

The new collection gallery, located on Level 3 of Block 39 Tanjong Pagar Distripark, will hold its first exhibition in September 2024, inviting visitors to connect with the vivid tapestry of modern artistic expression.
