Why Join A Club? Expat Reporter Sylvia Fernandes visits Singapore Swimming Club To Find Her Answer

Singapore Swimming Club, founded in 1894 and located at Tanjong Rhu is an iconic club well known to East Coast residents. Sprawled over more than 30,000 square meters, it boasts eleven F&B outlets, two Olympic-sized swimming pools and thirteen sporting facilities.

While Singapore Swimming Club is pre-dominantly a private members’ club and listed in articles, including Expat Choice as one of the Best Social Clubs In Singapore it does allow non-members use of some of its facilities. D’Galaxy, the Karaoke Lounge caught my attention. A minimum spend of $1,500 including food and beverage, this space could double up as a great corporate venue with breakout rooms.

To kick start an event, the opening address with bar and comfortable seats could then see mini group discussions veer off to smaller enclaves. Very affordable for a team of fifty at $30 per head. I would highly recommend this to corporates especially if in search of a creative space, away from the usual nondescript room that training sessions are usually held at.

Another space I felt that was worthy of booking for a private event was D’Tanjong where a lovely pub setting comes even more alive to tunes belted out by a live band. Choose to do an off-peak night where lull periods exist or get in touch with the Club to ascertain a night that is available Monday to Thursday.

I could visualize people chilling at the historic bar that has served many members over the years while others sink into arm chairs, the more comfortable option. This large space accommodates a whopping one hundred and fifty people. There is also a 10-lane Bowling Centre located in the club, and a wide range of sports facilities, including badminton courts, squash courts, tennis courts, an air-conditioned table tennis hall, and two fitness studios.

Of course there are function rooms too, four to be exact, that take a cozy thirty guests to larger ones that could hold four hundred. Over the years I have been to these function rooms for weddings, birthdays and many other celebrations, all of which were made even more memorable with top quality food served. An added bonus for members SSC has reciprocal arrangements with clubs worldwide in countries including, but not limited to Australia, Canada , Hong Kong, India, Japan and USA.

Singapore Swimming Club has been the rave for years when it comes to food and beverage. From coffee house to Chinese and Western, Singapore Swimming Club boasts 11 food & beverage outlets, offering members the opportunity to kick back and relax over a cold drink or a tasty snack anytime of the day. Whether chilling at the café watching swimmers race to the finish line or enjoying a casual outdoor drink on a Friday night, there are events happening at every outlet.

Why join a club? I guess my answer would be to meet people outside the normal purview of your daily routine. Clubs also double up as a convenient place to have a meal when time is of the essence and you are rushed off your feet.

I love clubs for the activities they provide. Whether to catch a daily swim or play a quick game of squash, these give members an opportunity to chill, get their exercise fix or have a good meal before heading off into the afternoon or evening to tick off the next task for the day!

A point to note for those not in Singapore for the long term, is that term memberships are available on an annual basis. Why not? A home away from home is where the heart finds solace, enjoyment and connection.

For foreigners new to Singapore, or long-term expatriate residents who want to have a change of daily lifestyle, get out and exercise more, and meet a new circle of interesting and inspiring people, Expat Choice suggest you visit The Singapore Swimming Club online to view membership options.  Individual Term Membership is open to Singapore Permanent Residents and Employment Pass holders. Term Membership is renewable upon its expiry and members who refer their friends to join the Club will receive $250 spending credit for every successful sign-up.

For Membership Categories, please visit the membership page here or contact the SSC Membership Department on +65 6342 3625 or send an email to [email protected] and one of the membership co-ordinators will be in touch to talk you through your options.
