Expat Choice visited The House Chungdam on an invite to savour their refreshed lunch menu. On offer were lunch sets – Bibim-bap, Jjigae, Tang, Ban-Sang & Jinju Cold Noodles – created for the business district population, nestled in the surrounds of Duxton Road.

I had no idea where or what Chungdam was despite the fact that I am entrenched in Korean culture spanning from food to music and of course K-dramas.

An upscale neighbourhood in Seoul, Chungdam is known for its refined dining culture. On offer are a wide range of food from traditional to contemporary, also extending to royal recipes once reserved for kings of the Chosun Dynasty. How interesting I thought laughingly. I could be devouring food that I watched Kings eat in dramas I followed.

A stop at the bar for a tipple of soju was good thinking on our part. Staff were busy with groups that had arrived at the same time. Giving them some reprieve we observed a grill set up between every two bar stools. Hmmm an idea for next time! Soju and grilled meat would be a fun thing on our next visit to The House Chungdam.

Shown to our tables, we decided to start with Bulgogi Bibim-bab where many ingredients come together in a mixed rice plating. The harmony of tastes pulled together with Australian Wagyu for $22 would do well for lunch. There were options to have a veggie or beef tartare version

Part of the acclaim of Korean food begins with the banchang (side dishes) that accompany mains. Our next order of grilled Australian Wagyu short ribs came with four side dishes that were replenishable anytime.

All sauces for meat marinade and side dishes were created and taught by a Korean Michelin-star Chef. No wonder the beef marinade was out of this world! We both raved about it having never had anything like this before.

Chef’s objective was achieved! He created authentic but different marinades and side dishes so guests would distinguish The House Chungdam from other Korean restaurants. I really liked that we had only four side dishes. With too many I have found it difficult to really enjoy all and would quite often focus on a few anyway.

We had marinated squid which was outstanding. The usual kimchi delivered as usual! Our favourite was the egg and potato mayo that was so creamy and paired well with mains.  Last but not least a firecracker leek & green chilly in soy that sent our senses through the roof.

Our next dish Kimchi Jjigae Bansang was a stew boiled with Korean traditional soy sauce and kimchi with meat. Ever so tasty and deliberately low on the sour taste, again for a different offering. At this point we surrendered!

No more space for Tang - clear soups or cold noodles. Looking around we felt the ambience clean and bright unlike small, crowded Korean restaurants. Exhaust fans that typically hang from the ceiling were concealed beneath the table top. No wonder this bright sunlit restaurant with floor to ceiling windows, didn’t hold grilled meat odours.

We discussed a return visit. What would we order? For me perhaps a dinner experience at the bar, grilling meat while sipping soju. Or lunch with a few friends to savour the other dishes we did not try.

If you were to ask me one thing that was the best, I’d say the meat grills as the marinade was simply outstanding!

A plus for those working in the Duxton area - a starter platter of three delights is included in your lunch order on weekdays only.
