So when Lacalaca gave Seminyak’s dining scene the first taste of truly authentic Mexican food, naturally, the island went loco for their straight-from-Tijuana tacos and cooler-than-Colonia-Roma vibe – and they wanted more. Enter: Lacalita in Canggu and Lacasita in Ubud – the little sisters to the Lacalaca flagship.

The salsas are made daily, fish is market fresh and they pay great attention to detail when they braise their select cuts of beef, lamb and pork. We recommend that you share as many dishes as possible so can experience the depth of delicious flavours and fully enjoy the Lacalaca experience.

The beer is cold, the sangria flows and the cocktails are made with only the freshest fruits, herbs, quality booze and crystal ice chunks. Their extensive drink list includes the daring Jalapeño infused Margarita and you’ll be singing rancheras like there is no mañana.

Lacalaca is a true cantina, with dishes like their Carne Asada Taco, De Queso Quesadilla, Enchiladas Verdes, Fajitas, Churros Con Chocolate and tons more from the kitchen, it’s safe to assume these amigos know a few things about modern Mexican food! Don't bet the tab on walking in without a reservation, however.

What others say:

"An upbeat dining and party venue that really gets rocking when the tequila takes hold" -FRV Travel

"Lacalaca veers more towards authentic Mexican cuisine made with fresh local and imported ingredients and zesty sauces that will keep you coming back for more" -Ultimate Bali

"Mexican Cantina territory tucked off a main shopping drag – that’s why we love Bali. We are not talking nasty cheesy nachos with lobs of cream – this is light and fresh, contemporary South West cuisine. Think lamb shank soft tacos and crab meat quesadillas just for starters. Cheap, excellent food and the cocktails are fabulous." -Food On Tap Australia

"Don’t miss out on the Margarita menu. The cocktail bar is the perfect place to hang out, or for privacy, grab a bar table and peruse the menu, or heck, just stay for dinner, after a few of these you won’t be in a hurry to leave." -The Yak "Inject a serious dose of cheer into your night with a stop at Lacalaca, where bright pinks, blues, oranges and yellows conspire to light up the one-floor, partly open-air cantina... A three-cheese roasted zucchini and oregano quesadilla definitely hits the spot." -Travel + Leisure

Some of the dishes Expat Choice loved include Carne Asada Taco, De Queso Quesadilla, Enchiladas Verdes, Fajitas, Churros Con Chocolate. Like the salt to your tequila, the beans to your burrito, Lacalaca is the heart and soul of Bali’s Mexican scene. Located in the centre of Seminyak, this buzzing joint comes with kick-ass and unpretentious modern Mexican food with a twist – generous servings of locally sourced, fresh ingredients, flavourful imported spices direct from Mexico and top-notch hearty comfort fare. The kicker? Awesome and friendly staff who’ll get your Mexican juices flowing, like maître d’, Putu Carlos with his contagious smile and rocking outfits! Image Credit: Lacalaca Cantina Mexicana Facebook Page

The place: Lacalaca’s little sister is no less swish, decked out in a clashing colour palette, bold murals and fun, breezy furniture. With just as much technicoloured pizzazz, full bodied flavour and well-earned hype, Lacalita has given Canggu’s surfers and local foodies exactly what they’ve always wanted – awesome Mexican bites with a modern twist, wrapped up with an ever-evolving vibe and menu, raucous happy hours every other day of the week, and rock n’ roll beats that’ll have you on your feet!

The food: Menu-wise, everyone’s favourites from Lacalaca make a reappearance here (hello, fish tacos!), but it’s a more curated selection with dishes exclusive to the Canggu branch, like the slow braised beef short rib in red mole sauce, and the Oaxacan ceviche made with ocean fresh snapper and juicy chunks of mango, avocado and chile d’arabo – yum!

The drinks: Those familiar with the Lacalaca legends will know that their margaritas mean serious business, and it’s no different at Lacalita. Try the new Chipotle Chihuahua with smoky chipotle chilli, tamarind, tangerine, lime and gluten free tequila, or if you’re just thirsty for a simple glass of vino, they’ve got that covered, too!

The verdict: Take everything you love about Lacalaca and put it in the swanky heart of the Canggu hood. Add in some exclusive dishes, a more tropical vibe from the nearby beach and an oh-so cool crowd who regularly sit in the open air space from 7am – 7pm on a Sunday for 2 for 1 Bloddy Mary's (us included) and like us, you’ll find yourself there until closing.

Round up the squad for a serious Mexican feast, because you’ll want to stuff your faces with mouthfuls of sopa de tortilla (smoky spiced chicken tomato broth with chunks of avocado and crispy fried tortillas), mochomos quesadilla (shredded beef and pico de gallo), and a sizzling plate of grilled chicken fajitas served with fresh flour tortillas, guacamole, pico de gallo and sour cream…  Muy caliente! There’s nothing quite like an icy-cold beer with Lacalaca’s spicy Habenero sauce, but we’d rather get sloshed on the bar’s tongue-in-cheek interpretations of cocktail classics and extensive list of tequilas. Load up on their signature margaritas (watch out for jalapeño infused signature), or sample one of their new frozen favourites such as the pineapple mojito. Drinks are available by the jug too, so there’s no better excuse for one tequila, two tequila, three tequila, four!

Nice food and friendly, efficient service but at the higher end of what would normally be paid for a meal in Seminyak considering it was far from fine dining. Almost $40 for a burger and nachos and four beers. David Kerle recommends Lacalaca Cantina Mexicana.
