The CBD

The Central Business District surrounds the banks of the Singapore River and Marina Bay where the first settlements on the island were established shortly after the arrival of Raffles in 1819.

Today the CBD may not be as lively as it was in pre-Covid days with the hustle and bustle of the working crowds flocking out for their lunchtime fill - although it still plays hosts to plenty of excellent cafes offering everything from healthy eats and wicked sandwiches, to heart stopping juicy meat-filled burgers. Whatever takes your fancy, the CBD has something delicious for each and every reader.

Free The Robot

Freetherobot/

Free the Robot was to front the entire exterior of the shophouse. It started with Bitters & Love, a cocktail bar that operates at night. Coffee lovers and co-owners wanted to open a coffee shop and the idea of space-sharing made sense because of its central location.

On certain Fridays, Free the Robot has TGIF day (Thank God its Free) - where he gives out free coffee or dessert or whatever he wants basically. He is quite spontaneous and likes to surprise himself and others amidst  daily routines. Image Credit: Free the Robot

Sarnies

SarniesSarnies' concept is simple. Genuine, good ol’ Aussie style grub packed with flavour and made with all things fresh. Sarnies is a cafe serving freshly prepared gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads and homemade bakery treats. They also brew freshly roasted coffee and tea. ‘Sarnies’ the slang word for sandwich, is a pumping little café located in the busy downtown area of Singapore.

Hearty fare throughout the day. Pimp your own breakfast from an expansive list of options (house-cured bacon for starters), massive salads and sandwiches for lunch, and simple punchy dinner plates perfect for the evening out. Don’t forget freshly roasted coffee in-house by their A+ coffee team that makes for every single cup that goes out. Image Credit: Sarnies

Dapper Coffee

Dapper Coffee is hidden away at 73 Amoy Street on the second floor. They serve damn good coffee and cocktails and food to make your soul happy. And yes, they have a lot of power outlets for you to use. Step into a place isolated from the hustle and bustle of the CBD and listen to the nostalgic sounds of the 1950s. Come in after two to get space to sit and chill with your laptop or a good book.

The single origin coffee hails from the Virgin Mountains of Papua New Guinea. Coffee cherries are handpicked by families who own small farms, so when you drink their coffee, you are also indirectly providing labour, income and sustaining livelihoods for farmers in this region. Queenstown

Queenstown was named after Queen Elizabeth II to mark her coronation in 1952. Besides hawker haunts, budget buys and hidden gems, Queenstown is also home to a couple of firsts in Singapore including a satellite town, public library and housing estates.

The black-and-white colonial houses in the Wessex Estate near Portsdown Road, Queenstown Public library which is Singapore’s first full-time public library full of nostalgia, and of course casual neighbourhood cafes. Get a bird's eye view of the cityscape from a Queenstown perspective at Skyville@Dawson, where there's a rooftop garden perched atop the 47th floor. Unlike Pinnacle@Duxton, there's no entrance fee and you can enjoy the panoramic views to your heart's content.

British military set up camp at Alexandra Road back in the 40s, then during the 50s, the area was cleared to make way for housing estates. Once the housing estates cropped up plenty of food and drink outlets opened the the area has flourished.

Colbar Cafe

Colbar

Did you know that Colbar is short for ‘Colonial Bar’? This old-school kopitiam used to be a canteen for the British Army when it first opened in 1953. Back then it served a selection of British beers and Asian-Western comfort food. Now, its menu has expanded to include curry, Chinese dishes, sweet treats and milkshakes. Regulars swear by its prawn cocktail ($11) and T-Bone steak with chips and peas ($25).

Here are some of the most recommended bars and cafes to visit in this up and coming area.

Ice Edge Cafe

Ice Edge Cafe

Pizza, pasta, gelato – those are the three words prominently displayed underneath Ice Edge Cafe’s marquee. But if you ask us, this cushy little bistro located along Kovan Road offers much more than that. Spinning up incredible, family-friendly nosh in a plush environment, Ice Edge Cafe is the go-to hangout for lazy weekend afternoons spent gabbing over the latest gossip and making new memories with friends, all while sipping on cups of coffee or digging into excellent Western-styled nosh.

Some popular starters include the unbelievably creamy Crabmeat Zucchini Soup and the Poutine Fries. For heartier fare, be sure to check out the Tom Yam Seafood Linguine. This Asian-inspired dish is made from generous amounts of prawns, squid, clams, and garlic, and is served over a bed of noodles. And of course, it wouldn’t be a kid-friendly place without a kid-centric menu with options such as Chicken & Mushroom Cream Linguine or the finger-licking Nuggets N’ Chips. C Cafe Joo Chiat

C Cafe

There are three things that must be on point to make an excellent cafe experience - service, ambience and food. Too often at least one of these is missing in the Singapore cafe scene. Expat Choice was therefore delighted to discover a newcomer to our local thriving Joo Chiat neighbourhood that adeptly hits the mark on all three of these necessary attributes - C Cafe (standing for Cards. Choices. Connections).

Speaking of good food, there’s plenty to rave about here. On our visit we chose the highly recommended Avocado on Sourdough Toast (well-priced at $18++) – smashed avocado on artisanal sourdough toast, garnished with dukkah, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, radish, feta cheese and lemon – an alluring combination of classic and middle eastern flavours.

Kopifellas

KopifellasKopifellas originated with the vision of protecting and developing Singapore’s food heritage. Kopifellas’s founder, Terry Neo who grew up surrounded by coffeeshops wanted to develop and popularize it. He dreamt of setting up a modern Coffeeshop in the 21st century, one that is hip, trendy and popular amongst people of all ages. His dream became a reality when he left his stable banking career to start the first Kopifellas outlet at Timbre+.

The stall was well-recived and Kopifellas was able to develop and expand towards Beautyworld, Toa Payoh and Geylang. The defining reason behind Kopifellas’s success lies on the logo. The triangles on the logo not only represents the teapot and coffeepot, but also the core values of Kopifellas - P.I.E (Pursue, Innovate, Excel). Image Credit: Kopifellas
