Groundbreakers in Wine Making Approach at Crittenden Estate

Published - 23 November 2021, Tuesday

They've always been groundbreakers in our winemaking approach – and the past decade has seen them embrace new ways of looking after the soil.

Conventional use of chemicals has been abandoned to make way for an innovative program of inter row cover crops of peas and oats, a composting regime and using recycled water to nurture land and build soil health.

Their mantra is great wines must start in the vineyard and they're committed to non-chemical management of vines. They’re driven by creating natural disease resistance in the vineyard, which will continue to reward them with healthier vines and resultant fruit. The results are speaking for themselves - they're enjoying far better expression of colour and flavour in wines, and reviewers agree.

They offer a new style of wine tasting experience. When you walk into the cellar door, you’ll notice things are different to other wineries.

You won’t be jostling for position at a bar, waiting for your glass to be filled. Instead, they slow the pace down with a warm welcome, a seat at your own table and a tailored wine tasting journey created just for you.

Wine tasting is experimental, educational and engaging. Personalised tasting notes accompany your wine flight so you can try, taste and discover at your own pace.  Their expert cellar door team are also on hand to guide you through their different varieties.

Try the acclaimed Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - signature wines of the Mornington Peninsula - or taste varietals you won’t find anywhere else in the region. Their range of Spanish and Italian varieties include Tempranillo and Sangiovese. With over twenty wines on offer to try, you might fall in love with something new. THE ESTATE RANGE

Proudly our foundation wines and premium range, these French varieties highlight the Mornington Peninsula’s claim as a leading chardonnay and pinot noir growing region.

LOS HERMANOS

Rollo and Zoe’s influence on the family business includes our very own range of Spanish wines driven by their love of Iberian food and wine. And with 'Los Hermanos' translating to 'the siblings' we couldn't think of a better tribute for this exciting collection of classic Spanish styles. Fruit is sourced from premium Victorian regions.

PINOCCHIO

The name of our classic, multi-regional Italian style varieties comes from the charming old Italian folk story. There's many story variations on why the Pinocchio name is used for our Italian wines, but one thing is certain - Garry’s love of Italian varieties is so strong he even wrote a book on their suitability to Australian climates.

GEPPETTO

This range of classic French varieties is designed for youthful drinking and is part of the family’s desire to produce premium but affordable wines, from grapes grown in several cool climate regions of Victoria, including the Mornington Peninsula.

OGGI

We've always loved to experiment with our winemaking and our OGGI collection (from the Italian word ‘today’) is our opportunity to showcase what we're trialing in the winery from day to day and year to year.
