Upcycling Vintage + Creating Community at Megumi Project

Published - 12 November 2021, Friday

Megumi Project is a social business operating in Onagawa Town, Miyagi Prefecture, which was damaged by the tsunami. Through making remakes of kimono, we aim to create employment, create a community, and become a source of grace for Onagawa.

Megumi Project (Megumi stands for grace and blessing) is about restoring beauty. At the production site in Onagawa, Japan they up-cycle vintage kimonos donated from all over the country into one-of-a-kind shawls, scarves, bags, journals and accessories.

The artisans, all women directly impacted by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, are empowered to gain income and new skills, nurture their creativity, and regain hope.

Hope, not only for themselves, but for the future of this remarkable port town, that in 2011 lost more than 800 lives, thousands of homes and the central infrastructure of the town.

Despite such devastation, the people of Onagawa have displayed resilience and a brave entrepreneurial spirit. One demonstration of this is the construction of a beautiful new outdoor shopping mall where they have the honor of selling their products. I love the quality of the unique, artfully made items. The kimono fabrics are beautiful. The crafters have an eye for stylish looks. Love the jewelry and accessories, scarves, ties, handbags. Glad they are using their skills to rebuild their homeland and their lives.
