Brick Kiln is a single varietal producer, focusing on making one of the best Shiraz from the famous McLaren Vale region in South Australia and is a Choice Wine Club favourite.

The owners of Brick Kiln, the Mankinnons, are Shiraz specialists with over 25 years heritage in the region. The Brick Kiln name is derived from Brick Kiln Bridge, along the road approaching the vineyard.

The Mankinnons are often asked how the relatively young vineyard produces shiraz of great quality and fruit depth. The Mackinnons believe they are truly fortunate in having the afternoon sea breezes from the Gulf gently cooling the ripening grapes in the late afteroon, while the gully breezes from the Willunga Hills cool the vines by night. This marvellous microclimate - together with the rich Urrbrea loam soil - allows the vineyard to consistently harvest ripe fruit with the now characteristic Brick Kiln flavour.

The eight hectare (20 acres) Nine Gums Vineyard nestles under the rolling Willunga Hills on Almond Grove Road at Willunga, Four hectares were planted in 1996 with shiraz vines (clone 1654) and three hectares were planted with the same shiraz clone cuttings in 1998. The vineyard planting was concluded towards the end of 2001 with the one acre home block.

The now well established shiraz vines are producing fruit of a consistent character and quality.

Now retired academics, Malcolm and Alison Mackinnon became involved in the wine business when they bought part of a 35 acre vineyard at Willunga in 1987. This became a Fox Creek Vineyard when Fox Creek Wines was formed in 1993.

On leaving the Fox Creek partnership in 1999, they — together with Garry and Nancy Watson and Ian and Pene Davey — bought the eight hectare (20 acres) Nine Gums Vineyard in 2001, and the first Brick Kiln Shiraz was from the 2002 harvest.

Recently, the Watsons and the Daveys have left the Nine Gums Vineyard Partnership leaving Malcolm and Alison to pursue their passion.

McLaren Vale shiraz, basket pressed and matured in American (85%) and French oak. Thick, sweet, substantial red. You wouldn’t call it a complex wine but you would call it a generous one. It pours kirsch, sweet plum, choc chip and toast flavours and it does so in smooth, svelte style. Tannin comes swamped with berried fruit. McLaren Vale Shiraz 101 in many ways – lots of flavour/no rough edges Read More Here: https://www.nicks.com.au/2015-brick-kiln-single-vineyard-shiraz
