Being the avid traveler that I am, and grounded due to closed borders, I felt a staycation would be a good option to play “pretend I was overseas”. More for a change of scene and to be pampered, I was elated when the Government gave hotels the go-ahead to open its doors to staycations. So my pick was the Marriott Singapore Tang Plaza for a variety of reasons, the first one being location. I could choose to stay in and enjoy the hotel luxury or walk around the shops, which I had abandoned for a few months now. Born into a city slicker lifestyle I needed that combo! Another big contributor was that I knew the Marriott Singapore Tang Plaza was on top of the Covid-19 guidelines and that gave me a sense of safety. So booking my weekend, I was pretty excited the day I packed my bag to head out for my mini holiday. Checking in to the Marriott Singapore Tang Plaza, I loved the grandeur that five star hotel lobbies exude. With chandeliers and regalia, I have to say I loved the buzz that was happening outside on Orchard Road equally to the quiet of the hotel lobby tranquility. Both had their place. I checked in for the Blissful Escapes Staycation Package that included English high tea and breakfast the next day. I felt that it was so much cheaper to do a staycation rather than international travel, especially for those with a big family. The savings on flights would be enormous. Plus minimal time carting kids around and settling them into a new home so to speak. The Marriott Singapore Tang Plaza Blissful Escapes Staycation Package affords a 24-hour stay with flexible check-in/out from S$380++ per room, per night, Fridays to Sundays. Car parking free too for those with a car. For a one night stay in the luxurious pool terrace room with direct access to the swimming pool, I thought this was a good deal. I had a pool on my doorstep. On entering my room I got organized and decided to walk around the hotel, survey amenities (staff at the front desk were extremely informative) and figure out what my day was going to be like. It was 1pm and I didn’t have lunch in anticipation of high tea at 2pm. Checking out TV channels, I planned for what I would watch on my return from high tea. I was delighted to see that the Marriott Café where high tea is served, was full. I wanted the F&B industry to get back on its feet again. The 3-tier goodies that arrived had lovely savoury sandwiches and many sweeter treats like scones and a variety of cakes. For bubbly lovers, you could top up for a glass, to make the occasion feel more celebratory. It was great to feel the vibe again in the Marriott Singapore Tang Plaza, a hotel I had frequented many times in the past. Felling like I had over-eaten which I definitely had, I went back to the sanctuary of my room for some time out. Curling up to a movie I started to wind down from the hectic week I had just experienced. By evening I felt like a dip in the pool as the sunset hues called out to me from the patio. The pool was so inviting with a beautiful backdrop of the ION façade. It was a good choice as the serenity of quiet and the therapeutic feel of water, lulled me into an even more relaxed state of mind. Uncannily, I was starting to feel hungry again. That was the best part of a staycation at the Marriott Singapore Tang Plaza. I could go out for a walk and choose any type of restaurant, or stay in and order room service. I opted for a walk out, as it meant some exercise after dinner. The buzz of Orchard Road roped me into some retail therapy but soon enough I raced back to enjoy my staycation at the Marriott Singapore Tang Plaza. I have to say there was hardly any inconvenience doing this staycation despite the so-called limitations imposed due to Covid-19. I was just advised to book a time for the pool and gym, as there was a limited number allowed at a time. Everyone wore masks while in the lobby and dining areas but once food and drinks were served, it was masks off. The Marriott Singapore Tang Plaza had furniture organized that observed social distancing so really, there was nothing much I needed to do. It had all been taken care of. To anyone reading this, if you need a break and feel apprehensive to do so, I would encourage you to give yourself a break. Hotel staff have become accustomed to the new normal and are operating at full swing to look after customers. I met David who had been with the Marriott Singapore Tang Plaza for more than 18 years. He looked after us tremendously well as we had high tea and was highly observant to the needs of guests. The next morning we were looked after by another hotelier Joseph who had been with the Marriott Group for the last 40 years. Bouncing around with anticipation of our every need, it is trained employees like these who give customers the feeling of security that all our needs have been taken care of. Having never bought in to the buffet concept, I was elated that I could order as much as I wanted from a limited a la carte menu offered at breakfast. A much better way to operate with less wastage at the end of the day and food brought out to the customer only when ordered. I felt buffets encouraged me to eat more when I really didn’t need to and were not hygienic left out on display for so many hours. Being a person who does not like wasting, I felt the buffet concept also contributed to a lot of wastage. Feeling completely rejuvenated from a change of scene and a night of indulgence, I checked out ready to go home. With renewed spirit, I was happy that established hotels like the Marriott Singapore Tang Plaza who had trained personnel and well laid out processes, were there for me when I needed a break. Until the next time sayonara!
