I have to be careful on this review as Tatyana is a friend of mine! However saying that this book is truly a great gift idea for people who live in Singapore or about to leave as a memory and of course just to anyone who enjoys taking an adventure and following the walking guides of these amazing town houses around Singapore.

Joo Chiat / Katong is a district north east of Singapore City that is home to the Peranakans.

The Peranakans are descendants of Chinese who migrated to Singapore from the 15th century onwards. They have developed their own distinct and unique and eclectic culture and cuisine, and in the meantime became prosperous and respected members of the establishment.

In the early 20th Century Joo Chiat and Katong Districts were being developed and many Peranakans moved in, and built colourful two-storey shophouses and terrace houses.

When you stroll the streets of the district you will see many colourful tiles set into the plastered walls of the houses. Look up above the commercial signs and look at the delightfully intricate carvings of the wooden windows and shutters of many of the houses.

Apart from strolling the district to take in its unique ambiance, try to find time for lunch or dinner at a Peranakan restaurant. The food is genuinely unique and original.
