Nek no Niwa

Published - 15 May 2018, Tuesday

Nek no Niwa is Singapore’s very first cat café, where people can enjoy coffees, snacks and of course the company of the café’s resident fuzzies.

The café cats are free to roam in an interaction space where they eat, sleep and play.

For an hourly fee, customers can come to the café to play and groom the cats, or just enjoy the therapeutic environment.

Our kids have gone a few times and just love this place. We have now 2 cats and hopefully that's enough for now. In the mean time we can take the kids to this fun place!

"I’ve been a regular at Neko No Niwa since 2014, and it is by far the best cat cafe in Singapore. Nestled in a shophouse by the Singapore River, this cafe is perfect for any true cat lover.

Sam and Sue are great and guiding newcomers to the proper cat cafe etiquette and helping to coax sleepy felines to interacting with eager customers. There’s a strict no-cat-abuse policy, but they deal with clueless customers with a gentle tone. Their passion for cats truly shine through, and they always aim to teach anyone that comes through.

This service makes a world of a difference in the cats themselves. While other cat cafes might have stressed out and sickly cats who lash out in fear, NNN’s cats are healthy, calm, and friendly. They’re more likely to warm up to you, given time and a gentle approach (which the staff will help coach you through).

The best time I’ve ever had there was on a Thursday evening, after a very stressful day at work. Instead of grabbing dinner, I went to NNN for a 1.5 hour session. Sam was really nice in coaxing a cat onto my lap, and I spent the next hour just petting the cat, people watching, and chatting with Sam. It did the trick; I was as zen as a sleeping neko.

Here’s my trick to getting the most out of an NNN visit:

1) Stay for more than an hour. Cats are nocturnal animals who take frequent naps in the day. The longer you stay, the more likely you will have the chance to see some cat action. 2 hours is just nice for me.

2) Get to know the cats’ personalities. They provide an instruction sheet to let you know how to approach each cat. For example, Miley is more wary about people touching her, but Jia Jia is more than happy to cuddle. Also, you can stalk their cats on Instagram ahead of time at @nekononiwa.

3) Listen to the staff’s instruction. They know their cats best, and if you listen to them, they will do everything in their power to make sure you have a good time.

4) Just chill out. Don’t go in expecting to be actively playing with cats the whole time you’re there. Buy some tea (it comes with free topup of hot water) and just relax. Watching cats interact with each other is more interesting than waving toys in front of their faces as they sleep.

Thanks so much Sam and Sue for 4 years of amazing service!"
