I was somewhat crestfallen when we arrived at the Hopstation - the latest in a long line of craft beer emporiums - located in the somewhat sterile China Square Central shopping mall.

These guys have a great selection of draft and bottled craft ales and ciders, but what amazed me what the prices they were charging. $15-17 for pints! Half pints from $10-12!! Seriously!

There are so many well priced new craft beer emporiums in Singapore - many of which are way more cosy, as well as waging price wars in order to gain customers. Although beer drinkers will recognise brands like Hitachino Nest, Fourpure Brewing and Singapore’s own 1925 Brewing Co., while more oblique brands like St. Boyne, Bernardus and SweetWater are available. So a saving grace is that there is a decent selection. But mortgage the house first.

The food is lamentable and is best completely avoided. The pesto in the clam pasta overwhelmed the clams and made them taste rubbery. The fish in the Beer Batter Fish and Chips ($16) was red snapper, which was good, but the coating - as it could not be called batter - was just wrong. And the chips weren’t chips, they were French fries. I would have called this ‘red snapper in a funny coating with French fries as opposed to ‘fish and chips’. There was also some odd mashed Squid Cake ($12) which were simply grim and the sort of thing you feed someone without teeth.

Hopstation is characterless, expensive and I predict that this stark and functional 90-seater street-facing pub, on the corner of Cross Street and South Bridge Road, will be gone this time next year.

Hopstation curate and source beer from all over the world from craft brewers who have worked diligently to find a formula as unique as their recipe for beers.

Each beer we serve, comes from a unique microbrewery owned by a small family or a single owner, who is pouring his passion in their beer, making it unique.

Our ambience with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere builds a sense of community who love all things beer and passionately appreciate the subculture that is building around the artisanal beer around the world.

You’ll find both familiar and rarer labels here. Hopheads will immediately recognise brands like Fourpure Brewing, Hitachino Nest and Singapore’s own 1925 Brewing Co., while lesser-known ones like St. Bernardus, SweetWater and Boyne are also available.
